I did a Google search for reviews on this sleep system and other than the weight and bulk for all four pieces in the bag (it's definitely not a backpacker tent) it sounds like they'll keep you warm and dry even without a tent.

Anyone coming to TTUHNFCO/R who, like myself, doesn't own any quality camping gear might seriously consider one of these. Some of the sites I visited had reviewers who said they bought used systems and they said they couldn't tell them from new. Amazon had them starting at around sixty bucks and there's a seller on eBay here in Indy (Fishers area) selling the latest generation of ACU camo units new for around $160.

I may give it a try on the patio the first cold night we have just to see how well it works.

The bike's gonna be loaded down for the trip to Hickory Ridge but at least I think I'm gonna be warm at night. If the weather looks good I may leave the tent at home and make the load lighter.

Hey I'm old, so we should work well together.

Woodsrat,
USMC Veteran here and I was issued one the entire stay in (4 years). I've used it in the desert, jungle, and woodland environments. All four seasons in each. First lets go over the awesome.
  • Modular-you can bring all or leave some at home
  • Waterproof Gortex-we never used tents so this was an awesome feature when it would rain in the jungle.
  • Synthetic Fibers - if it gets wet it dries quickly IIRC there isn't any down in there which is why the winter bag is so bulky.
  • Durable as all hell

The Bad
  • All four pieces combined it is bulky (however comes with compression sack).
  • If you compress too much you'll break the plastic straps. (I wish they were metal but the military being that you want to be quite on patrol the plastic makes less noise. We always taped everything up anyway so metal would have been better).
  • Heavy- Compared to other sleeping bags these bastards are heavy if you have the entire system. Not so bad biking it but if you plan on "Humping" it (hiking in military speak) it's not light.

Cliff-Notes- It is a badass, durable, versatile system and you won't be disappointed if you don't mind carrying a bulky heavy (for a sleeping bag) around. YMMV!

Make 'em cool and generic and what you don't sell this year you can peddle the next. I'm optimistic enough to think that this silly idea is gonna catch on.

Inmate BoxerDoc contacted me and said the aforementioned sleep systems are available both new-in-the-bag and used at the mil-surp store on the west side of Bloomington on IN 45. I've never been there but if you're in the area you might check it out.

You can also visit your local recruiter and he will set you on a path to get one of these

If I were younger I would consider joining the Guard again they have some pretty good equipment/gear compared to just a few years ago.

Someone design a sticker and I'll have them made. There are a bazillion engineers on here so I'm sure someone can come up with something.

Only arrow flingers will potentially be in the woods that weekend and there ain't that many of them.
