Storing my bike in Dubai or Oman???

Hi all,

I need some info on storing my bike in Dubai or Oman for 4 or 5 months.

I'm riding from Aussie to UK on a wee Yamaha TTR250. I'm currently in India and with winter fast approaching Europe I don't think I'll make it plus my bank balance is getting rather low. So I'd like to store it somewhere, head home and work, then come back around March/April and continue to Europe.

I have a Carnet for the bike. Does anyone know what the rules are for leaving a bike on a Carnet in Dubai or Oman? Can it be done?

And also, can anyone recommend an affordable place to store my bike? Anyone got a big garage?

Oman Bike Import/Storage

I'm living in Oman.

Are you intending to ship your bike to UAE or Oman? I'm asking this, since I have been told it is not possible to transit Saudia Arabia.

Carnet (Oman) - my understanding is that Oman does not participate. I have seen two alternatives described: 1) do a regular import, pay 5% of value; this implies you re-register the bike in Oman, or 2) pay a deposit on 10% of the value; however, there is some question as to whether you reliably get back the deposit.

Carnet (UAE) - UAE is now participating; I have no experience

Import (Oman) - I imported 3 bikes to Oman, 2 of them came from US as part of a shipment, and 1 was imported at the land border from UAE. I got an agent each time to take care of the process.

Storage (UAE or Oman) - I am confidant you will have multiple guys willing to store your bike. (If you are targeting Oman, send me a PM).

Good luck!

Based on some friends of mine who rode in to Oman on a Guzzi, Oz Plates with a Carnet... the Oman border did not even look at the bike.

The bike is still here - Now has an Oman plate on it... and they are planning on slapping the Oz plates back on it when then leave to complete their RTW.

Little point crossing this side of the Gulf - as you have to go via Iran to get to Europe...

Saudi - Not possible (terrorists ride motorbikes is what they will tell you)
Kuwait ... can not get too because of Saudi
Qatar -... No Vehicles allow in over 5 years old plus it is cut off from Saudi
Jordan - no probs - but..... after
Syria - HELL NO
Lebanon ... Ok
Israel ... ok
Egypt - Err.... Bad idea ... We charge you $$$$$ much
So you are going
Iran - No issues usually
Turkey - Ok
EU - Done

March will be nice in the Gulf - but you will melt from Mid-April onwards. BUT remember the mountain passes are not open at that time in the EU.

Does my future trip planning show through ?

Please msg me if you need any extra help. Oman based.
