Also, check out the Royal Enfield showroom at Hamriya. He deals in used bikes and last I was there, saw a KLR and a barely used 1200GS for sale.

'Ello mate, The royal enfield showroom, where is it exactly. Im am familiar with the area but have never spotted the place. Could you give me guide please.

Now, if you get a bike, let us know. I would be happy to drag you down the road to As Sifah

Welcome to Oman!

Well last I checked, there's a used KLR going real cheap at the Harley Davidson showroom. So you might want to check that out

It's a nice little country with plenty of scenic places/routes to explore.

Well, I've been here a week. I've been caught up in all the admin and battling jet-lag, which has hit me a lot harder than usual.

I have a car now, and I'm looking for accommodation (the camp they have me in is less than salubrious)

I saw an 1150GS advertised in the Al Fair at 18th November and 70 Way (Al Azaibah). I took a photo of the ad and now I can't read it! I think it was an '03 and about 2.9k Rials...anyone know the history?

I also to my great delight discovered the "West Bank" on thursday night. Although a pair of steaks and 13 martinis/mojitos came out at $270! Fun though.

Anyway, anyone who'd like a beer drop me a PM!

Eating and Drinking in Muscat

Hi Craneguy,

"West Bank"? Do you mean "Left Bank", up on the hill above Qurm Park?

Yes, expensive. There is a simple rule here: if they serve alcohol, the food will be twice as expensive.

Here is a rundown on restaurants I thought worth revisiting:

1) Pavo Real (Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos, or MQ) - yes, a decent Mexican restaurant in Oman, with an Indian soft rock band 6 nights a week...and a liquor license.

2) Silk Route (MQ) - pricey but quality Chinese and Thai food

3) Kargeen (MQ) - arabic food, big menu, outdoor seating

4) Sports bar(at Grand Hyatt) - sports bar under Club Safari, beer and pub menu

5) Chedi restaurant (Chedi Hotel) - for brunch....a tad expensive at about OR 25 each, but excellent buffet and a place to impress your date

6) Thai House (near Ibis hotel, AL Khuwair) - putting a plug in for friend of my wife, authentic if you can stand spicy

7) Japengo - (corniche road at Shatti Qurm) - maybe the best of a mediocre lot on the corniche, but a nice view and OK sushi

8) Pizza - plenty to choose from, none outstanding in my judgement...but I like the pizza joint in the food court at City Centre (Seeb) mall, for a couple of slices and some people watching

9) Rockbottom Cafe (at Ramee Hotel, Qurm) - Decent steak and a bar

Finally, 3 venues for drinks and live music
- Club Safari, Grand Hyatt Hotel
- AL Ghazali Pub, Intercon Hotel
- Rockbottom Cafe

Best time Wed-Fri nights from 10pm (this might change with new weekend schedule)

Laugh some more

Two more to the list:

Woodlands - Near Central Bank in Ruwi, Spicy South Indian food that you can
wash down with beer! They have a liquor license.

Nuts & Bolts - A pub part of the Al Falaj hotel, Ruwi. 'Supposed' to be a joint for bikers but usually empty. Pretty cheap when compared with other joints.

Worth riding to:

Oman Dive Center Resort - Perfect place for a lazy brunch. Their restaurant is right on the beach and serves pretty decent food along with beer.

As Sammak - Great place for seafood. The name means the fisherman so I guess that says it all. You will love the ride/drive. The place is right on the beach!

Cheers..
Mats

Geez it has changed since 1982. Back then drinks were either the rugby club, the PDO beach club or the Royal Gallah Wentworth Golf Club. The motorboat club might have had a licence as well. Otherwise you paid the bucks at the Intercontinental.

I still have copy of my licence that let me buy 40 rials worth a month from the bulk store.

The best food in Muscat was the Palm Tree Court - gravel floor to provide the stones to throw at the pi cats patrolling the top of the wall. Tandoori was damn god though.

I am looking for some good photos I can scan - no digital cameras back then.

Well the license bit hasn't changed yet

Looking forward to seeing some pics!

Away for a few days. Will see what I can find later in the week. Mostly 35mm slides so a bitch to copy.

Still wear my old Muscat rugby jersey when appropriate. I'm told the soft sand has gone and they play on a better surface these days.
