At the bottom of the hill there was a parking lot for hikers and a busy paved road above. This is where we were going to get GPS guidance for an expedient return to Duncannon. Instead we did tire triage.

Garth's tire and tube were new. It's a Kenda 270 installed in place of his street worn knobby just 20 miles prior to our departure for the trip. I put one on too. Throughout the trip we both commented on how well these tires were performing.

First we tried the easly route. Maybe he had a slow leak that finally emptied the tire in today's rough stuff? Let's try the CO2 pump...

Nope! CO2 in, CO2 out. It was time for a closer look and this is what we found:



That's a pretty big diagonal crack that extends from the severed knob almost to the bead. We had a spare tube and some tire irons but this was a deal breaker.

Nobody was going slab riding on that tire.

We found ourselves in an uncomfortable position. We had two bikes and the most road worthy of the two was the one with the Gorilla Tape repaired case.

WONDERFUL!

At least the rain had stopped.

Using our resources and brains we formulated a strategy. The first order of business was to NOT run my bike out of oil. To that end we located bike shops with the GPS and called them. They were all closed. Next, it was auto parts stores that sold bike appropriate oil. We found one in Carlisle PA seven miles north of our position. I took most of the gear off my bike and headed out.

Carlisle is a nice little town with way too many stop signs, red lights and crosswalks for a bike leaking oil. Every time I stopped I looked down to see drip, drip, drip. I drove by a cop and made double sure to cross the t's and dot the i's. Getting checked out by him could have been the end to my trip if he was an EPA wanna be.

I made it to Advance Auto and collected three quarts of oil, some JB Weld and more Gorilla Tape. In the ten minutes it took me to buy the supplies this happened...



I was happy to enhance the auto parts store parking lot ambience with my contribution.

With twenty eight miles to go I hedged my bets and poured in half a quart of oil. It put the level well over the sight glass but whatever the potential harm was I still liked it better than running out of oil.

I stopped and checked the oil first at five and then ten minute intervals. It took forever but I got to the trailer in Duncannon with no damage done.

I paid Jack Daniels for the parking. I really only owed him $7 but was so elated that I had made it back that I slipped him a twenty. He was a happy Jack! It was a deposit into the good Karma bank.

I loaded up the bike and headed off southbound to get Garth. By the time we got all the gear sorted and the bikes reloaded it was really late. I dropped him off at his house at 1:15 am Sunday.

Post ride notes...

The ride was great!

The architects of the TET did the hard work. We just had to follow the green line!

My suggestion is to consider riding less miles per day so it feels less like a marathon and more like a tour of discovery.

Bring lots of Gorilla Tape and maybe some JB Weld too.

Don't ride over your head in the last minutes of the ride. It could be YOUR last minutes as well.

DON'T RUN OVER SNAKES...NO NO NO!

I hope to post some video once Garth gets it edited (he's NOT retired).

I have some pics of the progress being made on my case repair. I'll post that later. I hope you enjoyed the RR!

We had zero bug issues, except the friggin' bee. North of Duncannon? Unknown.

I wouldn't worry too much about running over the shake, I'm sure 90% of the members here have done it. The bad karma got you back though it looks like.

Besides the bad luck with the bashed in engine it looks like you both had a great time, well done.

Great RR , Hope you can get the klr fixed on the cheap .

I have a super sherpa and do agree the bash plate looks to be made from one recycled pie pan .
