Removing the case requires the removal of the flywheel. I managed to get the bolt out with no special tools. The flywheel has a larger diameter hole where a puller would go. I was about to resign myself to a flywheel puller witch hunt when I glanced over at Garth's bike, also in pieces, and saw his rear axle bolt.
I screwed in the bolt until it put enough pressure on the crank to pop off the flywheel. Thanks Garth!

The case has been welded by a friend. I had to file down the excess slag and get it to lay flat again. Gaskets should be in any day now. I have RTV sealant standing by.

Good deal , glad it seemed to be a strait forward fix . Since I got a 250 your RR hit home with me , Ive read alll 300 some pages of the 250 touring thread and that gave me the where with all to say ok on my super sherpa .

Im a jeeper and rock crawl with a 62 cj5 and it is used to having its underbits used as a hammer on rocks but when I look at my bike it looks a bit more sensitive

This whole motor bike thing is new to me but seems fun and a good way to waste money and time

Thanks for the comments on the RR!

Garth's bike is back in action. Cycle Gear replaced the tire and tube under warranty with zero hesitation!

My gaskets came in but the shop noticed one was torn so I'm waiting a few more days. In the mean time, I noticed my front tire was leaking. When I switched out the tube the valve stem fell off the old one. Had that happened in the final hours of the ride we'd be sunk. BTW I got my ins. policy renewal. The $95 annual policy includes $10 for roadside assistance. I didn't realize I had that coverage. I wonder if they'd haul me out of the forest.

Nice rr write up. Having been on the tet ur pics were enuff for me. Good bear shots. Agree with u abt taking ur time. Some of the folks that were met on my trips were real characters. Maybe I missed it but how far south did u get?

We got all of sections 7, 8 and 9 done. We went as far as Hungry Mother State Park which is just north of Marion VA. I could have spent the rest of the season riding the TET, it was that good.

Are the KLR and KLX rear tires the same size? Could you have swapped your rear tire (or even your whole rear wheel) onto Garth's bike to keep from having to ride without oil?

On most bikes that would work but my KLR250 is 17" and his is 18".

Really enjoyed the read and imagery your words spun up which filled in quite nicely with the pics. LOL at times with your humor and outlook and +1 on the earlier comparison to Joe Gresh's writing.

Quite the ending and adventure at trails end. Glad you both faired no worse and have great stories to share. Plan to get my 250 WRX out on sections of the TET over the next few years as well.
