Pacific Coast - Highway 1

I just bought a 2009 R1200GS a few weeks in LA and rode it back home to Portland, Oregon along Highway 1.....and have one regret......why didn't I buy this beautiful machine earlier. What a blast this trip was. Some pics below. This is a beach that is only accessible via 4-wheel drive....or the trusty GS steed....and very isolated. Seals fished in the surf, elk paraded on an island, a few people meandered in the sand. I could have stayed here a week....

Congratulations on the purchase of the GS!

Now, where is the rest of the report.

You can't just tease us with one great photo and leave the room. Let's see the bike and the rest of the story.

Great first post, looking forward to more...

Tell us more..

Tell us and show us more Hellon2wheels....

I have done the PCH a couple of times from BC to LA, one of my most favorite rides. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Cheers

I won't disagree with you Winstrom87, as this entire coast is great and we all like what we like, but I really like the section from Ft Bragg to San Fransisco as well. The last time I rode the PCH there was way less traffic on the northern section. I found the southern section to have too many dumb tourists in cages and buses driving with blinders on, you can't take your eyes off the road and/or the other vehicles as they will surely turn directly in front of you at any chance of a view with spot to park.

The almost empty highway from Ft Bragg was more relaxing with equally breath taking scenery. It was 2012 the last time I rode the PCH, the asphalt was newly surfaced that summer, such an awesome ride!

It is all great however, just love it there!

Cheers

Pch

The PCH is always busy on the weekends. I just moved to within 2 miles of Hiway 1 here on the Monterey Peninsula. The best time to ride it is mid week when the tourists and motorhomes are gone. I will admit there are parts that I like better than others. Gotta love the stretch between Carmel and Cambria, though I do love the section between Tomales Bay and Fortuna. There is a section where the road leaves the coast north of Fort Bragg through Legget that runs through the redwoods. Some of the best riding on the route for sure. Anyway, I live here now so get to ride anytime I want. A fun stretch is North towards Half Moon Bay then turn east to Pescaderos and up to Alices. Good stuff.

I just did the 1 from where it peels off the 101 in Legget all the way down through San Francisco and down to where it hops back on the 101 in San Luis Obispo .. And I saw nobody on the road from Legget to Jenner and that was hours of driving. It is a fun road but not so much in the fully loaded pick up I was driving, pretty much 3.5hrs to cover 150miles
