Day 12: End of the Dalton, Finally

Yeah! We completed the Dalton!

We even remained upright, which wasn't so easy the last couple hundred miles.

Day 13: End (NOT DAY 12)

I told you I would get confused. The last couple posts should be titled Day 13.

We get back to Fairbanks and head to McDonald's for a quick meal and FREE WI-FI.
We treat ourselves to a nice hotel room at the Holiday Inn. We deserve it, right?

Then we head back over to Adventure Cycleworks for bike cleaning and an oil change.
I felt guilty showing up at dinnertime, even though he says he's open 24 hours, but we weren't the only ones there.
I would highly recommend Adventure Cycleworks. Dan knows what he's doing and was very reasonable with pricing.
I wish I could find a mechanic like him closer to home. I watched him provide assistance and his knowledge to other
motorcyclists working on their own machines at his place. He shared a few tricks with me as well.

Dan is a proud Alaskan. I got the sense he doesn't respect the riders that complain of the lack of scenery on the Dalton.
I wouldn't either. He also has an idea how far you actually made it up the Dalton by the layers of different
colored mud on your bike. I'm not sure he believed we made it all the way up. Listening to his stories made me
want to move to Alaska.

We considered our options for tomorrow. Rain is in the forecast everywhere. We decided to ride to Valdez. Before we went to bed
I filled out an online reservation form for a Glacier and Wildlife Cruise. Waiting for confirmation...

The view from the hotel room at 12:20 AM.

OK, the 150 seems to do better.
Matt corrected me - our 140 was destroyed after 2000 miles, not 3 like I thought.

Oooh. I hope you didn't have a 2up "rock nap"...

Your photos are killing me!!
they're SO good.
the beauty. she hurts.
We share the same anniversary?!? 18 years? If so, what are we gonna do for the 20th?

This was the second Heidenau K60 rear at 5002 miles.

Swollen Rivers

We ride back to Delta Junction and take the Richardson Highway.

Without really planning it, we are riding the entire length of the pipeline.

Day 14: Independance Day in Valdez

We check into the Bear Paw Campground in downtown Valdez.
They have walk-in campsites. We run all the way to the top of the
hill and get the "honeymoon suite" with a view of the harbor.

We walk down to check out the boats. The big catamaran on the left is the boat we've agreed to ride tomorrow.
I'm a little worried about this. Spending 9 hours on a boat with other tourists doesn't sound like it could be much fun.
I'm thinking I'll be ready to jump overboard after 3 hours... maybe 5.

Valdez Harbor

We stroll over to Mike's Palace for dinner. Helen gets the baked Halibut,

and mine comes fried.

We hurry "home" to watch the fireworks.

This was this first July 4th fireworks display we've seen in the rain and daylight.

Easy Day

Day 15: Stan Stevens Glacier & Wildlife Cruise

No riding today, but we are still traveling.

In the morning we walked down to the pier and boarded our boat.
We ended up in the front of the main cabin with a 6 seat booth to ourselves.

As soon as we leave the harbor we learn about the salmon fishing.

Full Nets!
