1974 dt400
I have a chance to get a DT400 for $800. the bike is stock and running. The owner tells me the woodruff key broke and he replaced it and it broke again. He replaced it again and said the problem is that it need the correct one from Yamaha. This is the only known problem with the bike. And no title. What do you think? It would make a good woods bike wouldn't it?

I think '75 was the first year of the 400. This was probably made in '74 as a '75 model.
Woods bike? I guess it depends on how fast you want to go. Suspension is not very good and they are pretty darn heavy. But if that was the bike I had... it would be my woods bike until I could get something more modern and lighter. Yes, get the correct woodruff key. You may still have issues if where the crank contacts the flywheel is buggered up. You may have to use some lapping compound to make sure you have good contact. Also you have to replace the crank seals, its not that hard but it must be done so you don't suck air and seize the piston. Bleary screwed with this post 08-04-2012 at 04:39 PM |

Hell yeah. Yes the 400 replaced the 360 in late `74. They are "the ducks nuts Max". Suspension is and will be a bit wooden, but I have always had the opinion that if you can ride the wheels off something that really wooden, you`ll be so much better when you step up to the 21st century.
The bikes a classic. Get it for the hell of it. They dont make em like this anymore.
