1st moto camping trip

Brad & Mo on their 1st Moto camping trip. 2 weeks ago, just getting around to posting.
Denver to Salida, via Tarryall creek, then camped up Poncha creek. Unfortunately lost the pix along Tarryall due to a camera card failure.

1st camp along Poncha creek. The ride up Poncha was a nice warmup for the weekend. Much more fun than Marshall pass rd.


On Poncha creek road, getting close to the top.





From Marshall pass, down to Sargents, the on to Cumberland Pass, between Pitkin and Tincup.

We camped the 2nd nite in Taylor Park, sorry no pix.
After much debate, gathering opinions of random strangers & ADVers, we decided to ride up Tincup Pass. This is Mirror Lake at the bottom.

The downhill was fun too. We took the Goose Creek route through the Hayman burn area on the way home. Interesting, but kinda long. Great weekend. No drops, no mechanicals, a lot of rain (mostly on the way home).

Would you mind comparing and contrasting the DR650 vs. the WR250r?

Highway, Gravel, and rougher dirt etc?

I haven't ridden the WRR nearly as much as the DR since it's the wifey's and if we're out together she won't let me. . But I'll venture forth anyway.
Highway, > 60 mph DR. Twisty highway, WRR. Gravel, probably same. Rougher dirt, WRR.
  • DR feels much heavier. It is heavier, & you really feel it
  • DR better at speeds > 60. The WR does pretty well, just not as good.
  • WR more fun in a twisty canyon road. Steering feels more neutral, and it just feels more fun.
  • WR more fun on the rough stuff. I need to steal it from the wife & ride it more. Much better suspension on the WR than the DR. That said, I've ridden most of the same jeep roads on the DR that I've ridden on the WR.
  • The WR is jerky from a stop. I think its a combination of the lack of low end torque, grabby clutch, small, low inertia engine, and perhaps poor design. The DR is smooth starting from a stop.
  • DR sounds better (shallow, I know, but it it does sound better :.
