Funny, I thought I posted a pic of the CB1100, which most people consider a "standard" or "retro" bike....

Things Dealers Tell Customers

Dealership ~ 30,000 miles: "You should think about brake pads"

Dealership ~ 40,000 miles: "You need brake pads"

Dealership ~ 50,000 miles: "You need brake pads"

Customer 60,000 miles: "You're trying to rob me! It shouldn't cost so much money to fix my brakes!"

better top-down photo here - didn't embed since it's repetitive: http://imageshack.us/a/img22/2954/05ci.jpg

And for a poor image of the poor piston that was ruined (also screwing up the caliper):

Both sides were like this.

I get that any time I take one of my vehicles to a shop. I run my rotors down pretty low.

Then again, I also know what Im doing, so I dont give anybody shit when something fails like that.

Thanks for the reminder. I asked at the last tire rotation (about 2000 miles ago) and was assured the shop had checked the brakes on my truck and they were fine - but I was not convinced. Heard the first sounds of metal-on-metal a couple of days ago and sure-enough new pads are required. This is the second time I've had to change front brake pads on this vehicle in 18 years and 140,000 miles. Last time (about nine years and 70,000 miles ago) it cost me $8.50 and took me twenty minutes so I am pissed at the excessive maintenance needs! Add that to the alternator that went out seven years ago and the two batteries I've had to replace - I am starting to think I have a lemon.

ME ~ 35,000 miles: "Take a look at my right side pads, I have some squealing"

Dealership ~ They're fine.

Me ~ 35,100 miles: "I think I need pads, the right front is making noise again"

Dealership ~ Gonna have to replace the rotors, they've been grinding.

Lady comes in one day in a shitbox Sunfire or Cavalier or something complaining of grinding noise when using the brakes. Got the car up on the lift, pulled the wheels - I was absolutely stunned to see that the entire outer face of the rotors had been worn away.

In other words, imagine when you pull off the wheel you just see the "ribs" of the rotors because the outer face is completely gone - and of course the "ribs" are all bright and shiny from being ground down!

Naturally of course she objected to the cost of repair (maybe thought we were trying to rip her off) but the manager, to his credit, explained to her the severity of the situation and wouldn't let her drive it out of the store as it was completely unfit for the road.

Unreal.

My brother is a transmission rebuilder, had a customers car come in the shop on the tow truck. She said it wouldn't move, needed a transmission.

The calipers were worn into the rotors and had the wheels locked up.

Here's my rotor pic. Girlfriend said her explorer was vibrating when she hit the brakes. Couldn't imagine why.
