We're headed to Ashwood tomorrow on an XR's only exploratory run from Bend. Maybe we'll have enough fuel to continue north for a report.

Cool. I was thinking a nice gravel route from Antelope to Twickenham might be a nice contrast to the Bakeoven & Shaniko/Antelope twisties.

Thanks Apple Jam

I appreciate the input. I always ride with my Spot, otherwise the wife worries. I also try to make my decisions on the conservative side. I noted that Benchmark Maps cautions about impassable roads when wet. Next weekend looks promising with no rain forecasted and temps in the 60's. That being said, I am trying to round up a friend to see if he can make it.

Have you been through that route?
Been there, tried that, I have been turned around at both ends! If you want to go North you have to go East to Cold Camp or also known as Divide Rd.

How about 218/Cold Camp/Divide/Gonser/Burnt Ranch/S Twickenham/N Twickenham?

Looks good on the map, but then, so did the other way.

The only word of warning I have to offer is this, Gosner Rd. to the East of the Divide Rd. intersection should be dry! If it has been raining or is wet you could get stuck.... Going off the East side of Horse Heaven is a lot of that red clay that turns into slim with just a hint of water. I would say wait until you have a good week of dry weather and then all of the roads you asked about should be good to go!

Thanks, I'm all for dry weather riding.

I agree to what's been posted. Ashwood doesn't connect to Tub Springs...unless you have bolt cutters and wear body armor.

You don't want to be riding Gosner road when its wet.

Awesome ride on the right day.

That road doesn't go thru. Mapquest & Benchmark are in error showing that it does.
On the south end there's a rancher who will get very angry if you ride on the road thru his property. I know first hand.
There are at least two locked gates further north that I've been told about
I haven't ridden Tub Springs from north to south

And there are "Signs" as well (on the Tub Springs side)... For what it's worth, I'd rather ride Cold Camp Rd. & Divide Rd. to the East it puts you on top of a ridge with great views!

Agree with Craig. Best 3-season section is from Donnybrook (Divide Rd) to the John Day River,
past Horse Heaven and through the Cherry Creek Ranch.
(BEST section, IMO, is Trout Creek, with all the creek crossings and into the Ochocos, but limited seaonally)

From the top of that ridge Craig speaks of....

The cows have it good in Cherry Creek Valley.....

And then, when you reach the John Day River....

When I was investigating the area around the Kinzua Haul Road, I ran into more "No Trespassing" signs than I have ever seen in my life. The property rights of the Kinzua road have been confirmed in court, but I have wondered about how many of the other closed roads might actually be public right-of-way that is just being claimed by landowners to keep out the riffraff.
