Yep, when riding with mates, just remember no matter how old you are......... It's not a race.
Except perhaps for the bit between when you first ride off in the morning until you finish at the end of the day.

Very good apart from two problems,
1, after getting my camping permit at Rainbow, I started to pull back out on the road and the bike just stopped (like an electrical fault) even though I had enough speed to try and bump start it but it wasn't playing the game. Stopped on the side of the road and tried starting it with no luck. Started looking around for about a minute looking for the fault, then tried it again and it started.
Spoke to a mate with a 690 and he has had this happen twice, so going to have to try to find the solution as it doesn't sound like its just my bike.

2, on the return trip after I got off the island, my brand new Andy Strapz Velcro let go (it was lapped about 3/4 of the full length Velcro) after looking down
and seeing one bag dragging in the chain, held on with the bottom strap and the other bag missing, I had to back track 6km to find it.
The damage is one bag with a broken male plastic clip and the other with chew marks from the chain and a hole in the front of the bag. Talk about pissed off!!
I would have though they would have a fail safe, if the Velcro let go they still could be held on the bike without them flopping off and dragging on the ground.

To cap it all off, when I went to get the lost bag I lost one of the rally raid breather hoses carrying the bag

Thats a bit wierd, almost all the group of 12 I rode APC with last year (myself included) had Andys gear, and had only one issue.... one wasnt adjusted right, and sort of melted the Strapz (stretchy strap) on a muffler.

You sure did have a lot on board..... sure you need all that gear?

When I crashed my 990 I damaged my Andy Strapz panniers buckles and straps and put holes in them but took them to a military bag maker by enoggera and he made them like new with buckles and everything for about $25,

Another thing with the Rally Raid Tanks, they come with breather hose and a t-piece which I replaced with the nice stubby orange tank cap vents. Now when I was running full fuel I would get petrol fumes until I was down about half a tank, you won't notice it through normal short preAPC test riding but on the 14 day trip when starting every day on a full tank it gets up your nose eventually. I would recommend the pipes and t piece to run the breather down the side of the radiator maybe.

With the Andy Strapz it was Podge who recommended modifying the strapping so each Pannier clips around its own pannier frame and get rid of the cross strapping, I ran out of time to do it but always ran with my cross straps under the seat for added protection.

here is Podges mounting method

and my set up is here:

Thanks for that Andy, I was going to redo the breather hoses.
In regards to the bags I was going to email Andy Strapz tomorrow to find out what the problem is as I followed the instruction in the bags.

In regards to what I had packed: I hardly had anything in the bags.
Bag 1; pit posse bum bag and 2 spare tubes, 2 empty 1L water bottles
Bag 2 board shorts, t shirt, thongs, small pack of spare bolts and a fist aid kit. 2 Empty water bottles
The red dry bag; cycle 2 man tent, small chair, small tarp, sleeping bag, knife, fork, spoon, plastic cup and plate.

In the scheme of things that is bugger all. The other bag you see on the beach photo is the camelbak.

As you can see with the photo below, this is how the bags were stuck together when they came off the bike.

I was going to do it, I even got my holidays booked, but I bought a new bike and realisd I wouldn't get it set up in time, so I'm not. Here's the thread on it.

I used a pair of cheap Aldi straps on each pannier bag - 1 vertical and 1 horizontal and they were attached to the pannier frames so were easy to use. Really keeps them solid and is a good cheap failsafe IMHO
