Thumb Badger reprieve

I just saw on the local news that the car ferry Badger got a two year reprieve. It runs between Ludington and Manitowoc. Enjoy the boat while you can.

Wow. Talk about NINE LIVES. I love that old boat. The crossing is something everyone should do at least once. It IS getting a bit pricey, and I believe there (still) is a competitor that makes the crossing a bit faster for about the same $$$...but the Badger is a piece of history.

>>>>>
"With a new sailing season set to begin in about a month, the legal agreement between owners of the Badger car ferry and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency amounts to a compromise that will give the ship a temporary reprieve from federal clean water regulations.

In return, the ship’s owners agreed to a court-enforced deal that requires them to stop discharging coal ash into the lake by the end of the 2014 sailing season."
<<<,

Seems to me they agreed to have it cleaned up once before (by 2012)....and it didn't happen. I recall some mention of converting it to an alt fuel. I might just have to work in a crossing into my Yooper tour this summer.

Why can't they just collect the coal ash and dump after each trip?

Awesome. I'm planning a trip that will likely incorporate this.

If you hit it right I believe May-June on certain dates Motorcycles ride free on both boats. We took a trip a few years ago on the Highspeed ferry from MI to WI and then the Badger from WI back to MI. Our bikes rode for free both ways we just had to buy out personal tickets. It was a fun weekend trip.
