Which app?

My old eyes are not able to focus on these tiny GPSs any more. I got myself a 7" tab that I have tried Sygic on. It was great but you can't load .gpx files without jumping through a shitton of hoops. SO.... I'm looking for a decent app that can run independently off net/cell coverage.

The first generation of google Nexus 7's are hitting the refurb/used market. I picked up one off of amazon for $150 in box with a 90 day guarantee. I got the non-cellphone version; this one only has wifi & gsm. Seems to work well, although it took a while for it to go through all the software updates it needed.

I design a route on google maps when I'm at my desktop, save it to google maps engine, and then open it on my nexus 7 when it's connected to wifi. Hit the navigate button, put in my earbuds, and i'm off to the races. It will navigate custom road routes offline. I haven't tried anything offroad. It works well reciting verbal instructions, fading out my music when necessary. I loaded up Sidecar Jockey's track from the Ridin' dirty thread no problem.

That specific app is called Ulysse Speedometer (that's not a typo, there's no S at the end of Ulysse), and it's free. The thing I like about it is that it will overlay a speedo gauge, gps accuracy, and whatever else I want over google maps. It's typically used for autos, but no reason I couldn't use it on my moto.

The 'what am I missing' part comes in when I think, if I have all this on my tablet, wtf do I need the SV's instru cluster for? Why is this a bad idea? Why haven't other people done this?

Gotya... my tab is an asus nexus 7 first gen refurb I got for 150$ LOL

I have removed the entire front end of my GS (including instruments) and have replaced it with a Yamaha YZ fork/tripps, brake and wheel.... and this as my replacement dash.

OH and so far this mod has netted me a 20# lighter front end

Eeeeenteresting.....

I just don't wanna fiddle around with a separate GPS unit, and trying to get the hardware units to talk to each other. I'd rather just load it & go.

Oh I'm with you. The gps in the trail tech is only for backup. I will be using my tab for gps duties (if I can get some of the logistics and apps worked out to be reliable.)
It's gonna look good in the top of my faring almost a heads up display.

I don't want mine that high (right now I"m just sticking it in my tankbag, and navigating via audio only), hence all the instru cluster business. But I was looking for a long time for a way to transfer google maps on the desktop to a mobile unit. There's a few hoops to jump through as far as setup goes, but honestly I'm pretty satisfied so far. It does exactly what I want it to do.

The place is small, so perfect for a group of 3 to 4.

Any place nearby to sit and do take-out? Park, graveyard or church?

New 450 Brit dual sport bike coming to the USA. Sounds promising.
