Poor Man's Adventure Tourer
Or... How to Build a Low-Tech Adventure Tourer on a Budget
Start with a used 2004 SV650 with 7,000 miles. Ride it home from Miami to Tampa with a tropical storm chasing you. ![]() Bolt on some SW-Motech carriers and a Sargent seat. ![]() Add some Seahorse cases. [/url]Buy a used windscreen from a Tiger 800 and fabricate some mounts. ![]() Raise the front fender in preparation for 17" TKC-80s. ![]() Crank up the suspension preload. ![]() Go ride. ![]() ![]() ![]() If the tires weren't almost new, I'd replace them sooner, but I'll enjoy the grip for road riding until they wear out, then spoon on some TKC-80s. Not much fun in the dirt yet, but the suspension is better than the Versys' in bumps. ![]()

Skid plate is a must, there's an awful lot hanging out there to get bashed on. Certainly enough to leave you stranded somewhere even with a minor hit. I thought the seat was a bit pooh as well.

I like it! I've done some of the same things to my Speed Triple. TKC's are next after my Scorpion Syncs wear out. Check out ATV bars for higher bars than what MX bars are. Also Rox risers.

Looks like a good start-
The only thing I would really try to get right is the standing riding position which will be crucial A lot of people complain about the 17 inch front wheel but I put some shinko 244s on my wr250x with the 17 inch wheels and did the Continental divide trail and the UTBDR this summer without issue. I know it's a different bike, but I should still work fine. The steering is a little (ok a lot) slow but unless you are doing woods single track it should be fine. So - risers, higher bars and possibly fatter foot pegs and you should have a fun and capable dual sport mount. |

Sv's are very capable once you figure out how to protect their belly and extend the fuel range.
They are King for the weekend track boys (and girls).

Thanks! Yes they are. Great tires, but they are on track to be done at 3500-4000 miles on my rear. TKC 80's are next. The Scorpions even did ok in loose as hell moon dust. At least that's what I called the powdery dust that I was riding through. Just had to feather the clutch a bit in the deeper stuff.

How much trouble would it be to swap a Vstrom 19" front wheel onto the SV? Seems like that would be the ticket.

I really couldn't say, about brake caliber spacing and such, but I'm pretty sure it's been done before!
Even slicker would be a pair of WIRE wheels from Procycle! They are SV-specific hubs, so would bolt right on. And I e-mailed Carl at Procycle to ask if the front could be swapped to a 19" rim, and they said NO PROBLEM, and NO EXTRA CHARGE! ![]() http://procycle.us/bikepages/sv650.html OK, they're $1,600 bucks for the pair, but the cool factor would be off the charts! ![]() HELLO PAUL,, YES, WE CAN MAKE YOU A 19/17 WHEEL SET FOR YOUR SV650. NO CHANGE IN THE PRICE. YOU CAN CALL US TO PLACE THIS ORDER, SO WE CAN GET THIS SPECIAL SET FPR YOU. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME,, CARL.
