I think I've posted this before but about 500m from my house is an intersection across the traffic and opposite a church. Well this one morning I'm on my KTM 640 adv, orange bike, yellow high viz vest, white and blue helmet, headlights on and as I'm about to make the turn, this old bullet and his blue head wife (maybe church goers fixated on a prime parking spot) cruises up to the stop sign, looks me in the eye I swear, and starts to pull forward into my path. Luckily I was watching him and was going maybe 20km/hr so was able to slow even more, hit the hooter and the AdvRider salute. He stops with a jerk and I make an exaggerated turn around him with a polite (yeah right!) verbal reminder to him to keep a better lookout. I was in disbelief.

So, such drivers should definitely be made to ride a motor cycle if they cause an accident like this. If too old and infirm - no licence.

wiggle your headlight and small turns mahe a bike less of a dot . Fast healing to you. my arms are yellow n white n black leather and I flap my elbows wile doing the wiggles. must kook odd but every little bit helps,

thanks for the support guys! for what it's worth, this wasn't at an intersection... he was turning into a yard on my side of the road... I'm slowly getting more and more mobile each day, and am talking fewer and fewer painkillers so I'm moving in the right direction

No joke. This is a theory I have heard before. Similar to how a dragon fly gets its prey... it comes straight at it so it almost looks like it isn't moving. It's called motion camouflage. A little wiggle and maybe some aux lights to create a "light triangle" might just help. I have been trying it out. Here's a link:

hey godwinmt, hope you are back on the bike soon.

just wondering what sort of boots you were wearing? if you weren't wearing something like mx boots and knee guards do you think that might have prevented the break or made it less severe?

just wondering because i broke my lower leg into many pieces. was getting back into dirt riding after a few years off and delayed buying mx boots as i was researching them heaps before buying.

so had a fairly basic off just wearing hiking boots and bam... titanium and off my feet for four months. i think i still would have broken the leg with mx boots and knee braces, but definitely would not have shattered the leg.

at the time of the wreck I was wearing my steel toe work boots. when I go on a ride I normally wear a set of mx boots with knee guards. in this accident I do not feel that wearing more protection would have helped. the break is towards the top of where the boots would normally be, and there was no damage to the joints. MX boots definitely offer more protection, but when it's 130lb me vs 5000lb truck, I don't think much can protect against that.

yep, i figured that was probably the case. ouch! i've got carbon fibre knee braces that might possibly stand up to an impact like that but i don't strap those on for road rides though. there is also the added consideration that if you protect a bone enough to prevent it breaking in a major impact then you may just be transferring enough force to wreck joints and ligaments which can take a lot longer, if ever, to heal properly.

Just a random note about that (and I'm not saying if it would have helped or not) the toe sliders and heel sliders on street boots do allot to help prevent injury when your sliding. I tore some ligaments in my knee with hiking boots on when the grippy rubber grabbed the pavement.

I got puIlled over for weaving. Uneducated officer thought I was stunting.

I explained how it was to make me visible to the car on the side street that was partially obstructed by sign and tree.

It works well, you noticed me too.

Ragtop, good reply. I do the weave and following drivers get well behind that goofy (maybe drunk) motorcycle rider! I'd also tell the cop that it is my lane from the right paint line to the left paint line. If I'm not doing anything dangerous, why is he wasting his time with me?

Thanks guys! Insurance had been moving very smoothly so far. The appraiser came out to the house the other day to inspect the DR and deemed it totalled. The insurance company is still working on the actual value of the bike, but as I asid, it's all gone very smoothly so far...the worst part about the whole thing so far has been my blood thinner shots twice daily...i'm normally fantastic with needles, but those damn things really stink.

I said crash free, I meant while I was moving. Twice, in half a century, I was rear ended while sitting in a left turn lane, waiting for the light. In a cage, not badly injured, on a bike, in the first one, would have been fatal. That's why I say, try to avoid left turn lanes if possible!

Bummer you got a SMIDSY, but I admire your positive attitude about the whole thing. My guess is yer gonna heal up fine, and be tearin it up in the future. Better to happen at the end of summer than the beginning.
