Talking Washington Backcountry Discovery Route. September 2012.

It was great!

Mt. St. Helens. On the approach to start the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route at Stevenson WA.

Mt. Adams from Trout Lake WA. I have skied that long south slope on the right 35 times as of July this year!

Mt. Adams north side.

Big trees. Old growth Douglas Fir in the Gifford Pinchot NF near Mt. Adams.

Bigger trees! Old growth Douglas Fir in the Gifford Pinchot NF near Mt. Adams.

Descending from near Mt. Adams to Randle, Mt. Rainier in view!

Cliff on Bethel Ridge, ascended after crossing White Pass to the east slope, the Wenatchee NF!

Camp on Bethel Ridge. Mt. Adams in view.

Dinner. Chicken en mole, rice, corn, red peppers.

Rimrock Lake and Mt. Adams from Bethel Ridge.

Mt. Rainier from Cleman Mountain.

Down into Wenas Valley.

Near Lion Rock on Table Mountain above Ellensburg. View to the north of Mt. Stuart, tallest peak of the Wenatchee Mountains- my home!

Haney Meadow. Our family camps here many times per season. Two summers ago I noticed a lot of dirt bikes and 'adventure' bikes passing when we camped. Then I learned of the WABDR, which passes here.

A view into Devil's Gulch, Mission Creek that flows into Cashmere WA, near my home in Leavenworth. Home soon for a rest day on Labor Day!

After a day off, continuing to the north.

Roaring Ridge north of Leavenworth on the Entiat. I think these are the last nine trees of the late successional reserve on the Entiat...
Hundreds of thousands of acres of the Entiat burned in '70, '88' 94. Ten thousand ares are burning in the Entiat country today.

Heading up from Lake Chelan after a burger.

North of hwy 20 up Loup Loup Cr. Nice shelter and camp at Rock Cr.

A proper coffee break. Starbucks coffee, sugar, milk in a 12 oz. Nalgene from REI

Loup Loup Creek.

Cow and calf moose in a pond on Loup Loup Cr.

Nice country below Ruby.

Scotch Creek.

Scotch Cr. Nice ranch!

Good burger at the Tamarack Saloon.

Climbing up from Conconully, back in Western Larch country. Western Larch is commonly but incorrectly called tamarack.

Lone Frank Pass 6712.' The high point of the WABDR.

Loomis State Forest.

Little Chopaka Mtn.

Lunch on the mountain.

Descending Chopaka Grade. Similmakeen R. valley below. Spectacular!

An old cabin on the border.

Thank you.

Sadly, there are fires near Haney Meadow and on Mt. Lillian right now. The firefighting efforts are -correctly- directed at the fires threatening homes and property, so the high elev. fires seem to be on their own for now.

Very nice RR Rob.
Your bike looks set-up nicely. You ride the _____ out of it.
Shame the fires in our back yard. Glad you took me through some of it just recently.
Thank you.

Thanks bud! It is the motorcycle, I think folks do not understand...I am more stoked about my little and misunderstood CRF230L, the more I ride it. This video shows why one would ride a bike the size of a 230L- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK9F_...ayer_embedded#!

For the WABDR new tires, D606 really changed the character of the bike. Wow. Better by far on asphalt and on dirt or gravel compared to the Trail Wings. The front D606 new with sharp edges was disconcertingly busy back and forth on gravel; but it settled in nicely with some wear. Those tires stick, the extra width compared to the stock tires is great. Just think, on those fat knobbies my bike *loaded for WABDR* weighs 310lbs. think of that compared to bikes weighing 100 to 200 lbs more on dirt and gravel on about the same amount of rubber....Again, I like my small moto!

I am happy to have done the WABDR in the time between fires

I have been studying the fires in the Yakima Complex- http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3256/ This includes Haney Meadow and Mt. Lillian. There are 95 confirmed lightning fires, size estimate total 202 acres. Probably not so bad depending on where the 202 acres are located. It will be a matter of the fire behavior/ weather whether the high-elevation fires grow.

Thanks. I bought that mug at the Conconully General Store. I love it, I had over a decade in EMS and more than that as an RN, so I like the sarcasm...

When my family was at Long Beach WA that design was on sweatshirts with 'Long Beach"- I think it is currently popular

You are welcome, thanks! It was fun. Kinda grows on ya- wanting to go cruise dirt roads through the Forest. I rode up singletrack to Chumstick Mtn. and back down roads at sunset to take a look. Nothing but smoke to the south, no view of anything. to the north. I could see a lot of fire north of Entiat.

Cashmere schools were excused early because of smoke today. This valley has unhealthy smoke levels and ashfall. No relief in the weather forecast, this could continue for weeks (again...).

Thanks for the pics and RR!
It's great to see more WABDR Folks on smaller bikes - and going solo. Sounds like you had a grand adventure!
