Sign ups open up at 0600 Friday. There will be a line of course. If you're there early hopefully you'll be on your way by 0700.

Nice bike!

We will not have volunteers there Thursday to handle signups, GPS downloads, parking lot assistance, tech inspection, luggage loading, etc. They are enjoying Thanksgiving with their families. We don't even set up until well before the crack of dawn on Friday.

More importantly, our permit with the BLM states that the route/GPS tracks not be given out prior to Friday morning so there's no chance that the route can be ridden before then.

Last year, the guy who rode both days on a TTR110 and who won the Smallest Bike Award, was the first one to get into Barstow. He even did the hard ways. I was there when he showed up around 1:30 p.m., I think, at the Ramada.

I asked him how he did it. He said that he was the first in line at tech check, first in line for registration and GPS download, and the first to leave at 6:30 a.m. There were only a few tracks in front of him on the ground, which were probably the guys who laid out the course.

He said he kept up a fast pace, avoided the gas stops, and had his chase crew meet him at all the road crossings, since he had a small tank, and he skipped the lunch stop. He wasted no time.

Now the second day was a different story. He didn't leave right at 6 a.m., which he should have. He had a TERRIBLE time in the deep sand on the hard ways, and had to find a way to cut over to the easy section. He said he just had to paddle his feet to get him through the sand. He was a tall, lanky guy too, so that couldn't have been fun. He arrived in Vegas a probably an hour or two after the first guys in.

So that's the advice. No messing around. You'll probably need a chase crew because of your gas tank size, and show up by 5:30 with your bike first in the tech line, so you can be the first in the registration line. Make sure you read my rider packet so you know exactly what the procedure is. Have your GPS and Toys for Tots toy with you. Your roll chart holder mounted, etc. No dilly-dallying around. Get that roll chart loaded on your holder starting with the end first, give your chase crew map to your chase crew and figure out where you'll meet them, and get out of there!

Expect a lot of deep sand this year, unfortunately, unlike last year. Might be a little tough on those little bikes.

Good luck!

He works for Yamaha. Maybe that had something to do with it. Or maybe not.
