2 day ride on my 990Adv - Abu Dhabi to Jebel Shams (Oman)

hey folks, been a long time since i did a longer-than-a-day ride. This time the summer heat was killing and although the long ride (400kms each way) to the mountains was going to be a torture, i decided that the long weekend had to be utilised and made last minute plans to ride towards "Jebel Shams" (jebel = arabic for mountain) in neighbouring Oman.

I won't bore you with many words but the torture of riding through 45DegC hot air through the desert paid off when it started raining at the foot hills. The valleys of the mountain were cool and i camped out at an open field in one of the hills.

cooling myself by soaking the shirt / jacket. It helped for all of 10mins, but it was heaven while it lasted

rains on the way

streets start flooding when it rains

video of water crossing (click the pic for video)

we reached the foot hills. see the thin snaking line going up the mountain, thats the access road to the valley. Yes, it starts out with a challenge.

not sure if you can make out the steepness in the pics.....

a friend who joined me in his new wrangler

got stuck (rear wheel buried) once and after getting the bike out of it, all went well

the track was twisty and really enjoyable, but littered with a lot of smaller ascents and descents, some of which were tricky with steep turns

the scenery was beautiful everywhere but in some places it was spectacular

I spent about a year in the UAE, mostly in Fujayrah, and it's a really beautiful country. Due to our mission there I didn't have a lot of time to roam around but found the contrasts between the gulf side and Indian Ocean side to be significant.

Looks like a great way to spend the weeked!

Hey Vicks what great post! loved the pics!!
Man - 400 km in this heat... That's a long way. I think that ride back home would have hung over my head! What a great deal to have a "Support vehicle". I really like the water crossing video - crossing water like that scares the crap out of me. I'm always sure I'm gonna find that extra deep pot hole.

Headed to 2xWheeler tomorrow to see what they have in the way o K60's.

Cheers! RH

Hi Vicks..

I'm actually planning to do the same trip at some point over the next few months, and after seeing your photos's I wish it was tomorrow, did you camp out or did that route include a stop at the hotel at the top? and did you need a spare petrol can?

Any info you can provide would be appreciated,

Cheers

very cool thread (but very hot place by the looks!)

great to see somewhere so different and yet even in that setting just a guy doing his thing like I am doing over here

it is weird to see such a stark landscape and I can only imagine 400kms at 45 degrees

we get to 40 degrees here and it is literally stinging at that

good on ya, fella!

Thanks guys. It was hot indeed and the dry heat takes its toll so I had to keep myself hydrated very often.
