Time to get back on the horse.....

On June 30th last year I hit a Kangaroo on the first day of a three week trip. That was the end of my trip and I haven't ridden the DR since.

By the time I recovered it was coming into summer (here in Australia) and work was way too busy, then it was Christmas and too hot to ride.

Time certainly gets away from you and now its March, the Cold Flame rally is on and it's time to get out there.

Hopefully I can update on the run.

Due to a few last minute items requiring attention I didn't get away until after 12:30 so had to skip my preferred run out of town on dirt roads. I slabbed it to Warburton for a fuel top up and a coffee at the Warby bakery.
Then it was up the Reefton Spur to Cumberland Junction.

From here it was dirt at last along the Woods Point rd to Matlock.

Then on to the Walhalla Rd before turning on to Mt Selma Rd.

Lots of dead trees around this area but the regrowth is slowly taking over.

Next it was my first wrong turn going right at South Rd, luckily it was only about 8 km before I realised my error and back tracked.
For the record I should have turned left then 20km further turning right on the Jamieson rd for the run into Licola.

Pulled into Licola around 5:00pm fueled up got a few cans and headed out along the Tamboritha rd.
There are lots of free camp sites with drop toilets along the Macalister river.

This was one of them.

A good night beside the almost dry Macalister river.

Next morning I set off, proposed destination the "Cold Flame Rally"
I headed further up Tamboritha rd to Arbuckle Junction

Then Moroka rd up to the Pinnacles. I have been here twice before and on both occasions the cloud has prohibited me from seeing what is reported to be a great view.
This time was looking good, when I got to the car park I was in full sun. I walked the 300 metres up to the lookout and here is a picture of the lookout.

I still haven't seen the view as the lookout was shrouded in cloud.

Back tracking from the Pinnacles I turned down Billy Goat Bluff.
Although I had been here twice before and knew this could be a bit of a challenge the track was ten times more difficult than I remember.
To any adventure rider taking notes on where to ride THIS TRACK SHOULD BE AVOIDED!
It is a steep long downhill in places covered in loose rocks and today also covered in four wheel drives. I counted 18 coming up and there was a group of seven going down.

There was a clearing about two thirds of the way down, even the 4WD drivers stopped there for a break.

Looking back up the hill

By the time I got to the bottom it had taken about 90 minutes top to bottom, admittedly we had a few delays waiting for cars coming up the hill but I was quite hot and bothered and totally spent.

Another 30 minutes or so and I was in Dargo to refuel and grab something to eat.

After this I headed on and managed to get lost due to misreading the map, then track names on my GPS didn't match those on the maps. By this time it was getting on and any chance of making the rally were lost so I back tracked to Dargo.

The weather to the north (where I was headed) was dark and threatening with plenty of thunder and lightening so I decided to stay in Dargo and grabbed a motel room.

That's the great thing about adventure riding, you don't have real plans just an adventure with a start and an end.

Next morning after the compulsory photo in front of the pub,

I headed off early south down Dargo road then on to Freestone Creek Rd (a nice little ride) before slabbing it from Briagolong to Licola. I went past Lake Glenmaggie which was looking awesome with half the lake still covered in fog and the sun coming up behind the fog.

Arrived at Licola for an early lunch then reversed the day 1 trip without the wrong turn.

I think that's the first time I have done a multi day ride by myself and it was good but possibly with more heads to look at the maps we may have made it to "Cold Flame" oh well there's always next year.

Oh and I didn't see any kangaroos only a couple of snakes both on the Walhalla rd. one on the way and one on the way back.

Great RR. Oz is on my wish list, not my bucket list because it's so damned
far away.

Hi Scott,

Yeah it was great to get out there. I would have preferred at least one riding partner but still enjoyed it.
Have you been doing any riding lately.

Great ride report Ando,

I love that area. I too have a done a few small trips on my own and I like the solitude, but theres safety in numbers they say.
Glad to hear you got back on the horse after the roo incident.

Must get out for more multi day rides myself.

Cheers,
Neil.
