'79 BMW R100RT and Sputnik

Hey guys! Pretty soon I'll be receiving my '79 BMW R100RT and will be mounting it to a Sputnik sidecar. So hopefully this will be my build thread. I'll be ordering a DMC Subframe to mount the sidecar and the Sputnik already has upgrade mounts per Jay. Got the sidecar for a steal same with the bike. I'm going to go through the bike and give it a basic tune up. Then take my time mounting the sidecar.

A quick question though...Since the bike has a full fairing, will that have to come off to mount the subframe and also mount the sidecar?

The Bike
Info from PO: full fairing , Krauser bags, dual front disc brakes, single disc rear brake, clock and voltmeter, very complete tool kit. Since it was new, things that have been added...floorboards, dual plugs put in heads, transmission rebuilt [about 11000 miles ago] the seat replaced with a "day long" Mayer seat, Luftmister trunk added.

The PO

The Tub: Sputnik with 19" Snowflake wheels (Cast Iron I believe) and disc brakes. DMC mounts as well.

Thumb Good start - Keep the pictures and progress coming!!

You will have to remove the right side fairing lower that goes around the cylinder to access frame for front DMC subframe.

Thanks! I should be receiving the bike on Wednesday. Can't wait! Going to go through the bike to make sure the brakes are good and running strong. Then I'll place an order in to Jay for a subframe and what not!

Got the bike in! Starts up right away! Is leaking what looks like from the drain plug and also from the forward portion of the drive shaft. This weekend I think I'll get working on it.

Debating if I want to keep the fairings or make it naked.

I've seen a few with the lowers removed - guess it depends on when / where you intend to ride it. mine, the left side gets a bit hot (lowers intact)

Looks like it's gonna be a cool build.
Good luck with it.

What are the two gauges above the speedo and tach?

I think one is an oil temp gauge, the other a clock.

The two gauges are a voltmeter and a clock.

When I mounted a sidecar on my Daughter's R100RT I made a hole through the lower right fairing for the upper strut. You don't have to remove it. Measure several times before you cut the hole. I had to make an oval hole as I missed the first time.

We usualy take the lower fairing off however you can cut holes in it to work. We have an RS in the shop right now that we have the mounts on but will not be able to install the sidecar until late this week as there are 3 others ahead of it for this week.

I wish mine was near 3 weeks of completion! I still havent had the chance to go through the bike.

Would you suggest the sidecar have an independent master cylinder for its brake or have it tapped into the bikes MC?

I have an '82 R100RT, naked, towing a Squire ST2 sidecar. Original torsion bar frame on the car. Also has EML leading link front end and rear Icon shocks. I think you will really love your setup! The bike has more than enough power to get you into trouble. I envy your disc brake on the car.

Best of luck with the buildup. You may want to rebuild the carbs if it's been sitting for any length of time. I rebuilt my 40mm bings using the Bing DVD as a guide. It will walk you right through the process easy peasy.

Keep the pics coming!
