Apple maps
Thinking there should be a place to keep all the apple maps info since iOS6 is released today. Looks like 3rd party devs
will be able to tap into the routing directly. http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/...ps.html/page/1 |

Looks like most of the features won't be available for iPhone 4 users that don't have Siri which is a bummer. Looking forward to the update, but....

After seeing all the atrocious map images in Apple maps I'm wondering if the iPhone 5 can be run on the previous iOS5.
Hard to believe they would release something so half baked. I miss Steve Jobs. |

I'm sure it will sort itself out in a year or two. Maybe this will push apple into buying Garmin.
Lol, this probably is all Steve's fault, still hard to believe he would have let it ship like this. I'll wait until I actually have it in my hands but the screen shots I've seen are embarrassing. Honestly I just want google "my maps" on my phone like the android users have had for years now. Maybe google will have mercy on the apple crowd. |

pathetic but funny

I was looking forward to Apple's vector mapping because it seemed to respond much quicker than google maps but at this point, uh, not so much. Posting this in case someone at Apple read advrider and wants to mention this to his boss. |

Open up Google maps in Safari and put a bookmark on your screen. You still won't have voice navigation but Google wasn't letting Apple use that feature anyway.

I'm holding off updating my new ipad to IOS 6 because of the map issue. I love looking at maps and use them all the time.
On the other hand, the Google Maps Android app recently got better than ever. Recently I was able to finally get a scale, which had been sorely lacking. Also, just today it now shows an elevation profile on bicycle and walking routes with max and cumulative elevation gain, and has a distance finder that includes the elevation profile. Wish I had this update last week when I was on a bicycle tour (Instead I used my ipad to remote into my desktop with Google earth and get an elevation profile - cumbersome but I had to know). Pretty awesome updates. My next phone was going to be an iphone 5 to enjoy the synergy with devices, but with the mapping disparity, along with all other IOS negatives, I am probably going to have to go with an Android phone. The tablet may follow at some point too. |

I'm still bummed that my iPhone 4 doesn't even have voice-based navigation with the iOS 6 upgrade. You need the 4S or better for that ![]() Quote:

Here's the best article I've read so far.
http://m.cnet.com/news/apple-maps-in...w-faq/57517404 If google comes out with an app that features "my maps" and offline maps it will be much better than the crippled version that the iPhone has had. For designing ride routes, I haven't seen anything as easy or as good as google maps on my desktop. A slightly better handshake with my iPhone is all I really need. |

I'm unimpressed by 3d maps - but I don't need it.
I did use the turn by turn last night just for the heck of it. It gave me reliable directions on a short trip in the city with good quality turn by turn. The only complaint I have is probably too many spoken instructions. 2 miles to exit ahead, 1 mile, .25 miles, turn now - that wasn't too bad. But in close in interchanges all of the "stay left" were really annoying. All in all, not bad. I'm sure it will be better in urban areas and not so good in the outlying regions, and outside the U.S. in small places. But then again, I have a Garmin Nuvii if I really want a GPS in the car.

I am sick of the struggle between Google and Apple. My email is a version of Gmail. Every now and then my iPhone refuses to read my email and I have to go to a browser to get it off a web page. I took it to Verizon to get it sorted and they told me the two companies were screwing with each other and I was the victim of it.
It's been working OK for a couple months now, but last Spring was a struggle to access my email from my iPhone. I hope their new map thing gets sorted.

I have an issue with that comment. If it is wrong even 10% of the time, it is not performing "well". When I'm running late for an appointment, I can't afford to be 3 blocks away. |
