I designed a mold to encapsulate the Motobrain in epoxy two weeks ago. I thought I would print it on a 3D printer at my hackerspace but I couldn't make it work correctly (video below of it printing) so I ended up ordering a pair from my favorite Tulsa Oklahoma prototype shop. They arrived today. They are open top and bottom. I set the Motobrain on the table, put the mold over it, screw a plate to the Motobrain and the top of the mold, and then finally put a bottom plate on it and bolt the whole thing together. I will then inject the epoxy into the mold. I'll be doing that tomorrow, you should expect to see some photos of a finished Motobrain day after tomorrow. I expect it would work well, but I do not have much experience with this so we shall see.

Yeah, my Solidworks version expired last year. I'd have preferred Solidworks, maybe I'll be able to afford it when I can get Motobrain launched.

Waiting 4 hours to see if I can extract this from the mold. I used 5 coats of wax and 2 coats of hairspray. I did forget to sand the mold though.

If you like, I can send you a few oz of a chemical release, loctite frekote 770-nc and FMS. I'm not a dealer. I'm a user. For my fiberglass molds. As long as the mold is prepped, NOTHING will stick to it. I'll send for free because I have plenty and you won't need much to get started. Look it up and let me know.....

Treat every 5-10 pulls and wipes on and flashes in seconds. Prep becomes a few minutes instead of a production.

Jeremy.

I've got some Frekote 122S coming in the mail. Is that good enough you reckon?

Great update!

Sorry if you already answered this, but curious why you are leaning towards an epoxy mold and not a potted enclosure. It seems time consuming preparing each of the molds.

Hey Crafty,

Just a 0.0002c input.

IME less is more with mould release wax, it just takes a leap of faith. Too much and it makes a mess of the epoxy surface.

After lotsa years experimenting with different release agents I have now settled on J Wax in a pressure pack for the parts I make for our business. It's surprising how short the burst needs to be to apply more than enough for a good release. It's freely available here in Oz, but I can't seem to get google to do a decent search for a USA supplier.

Maybe you could smuggle some back in if you drop over this year

For prototypes I'm not too worried about finish. I just want it to release. The mold was $400+ so the important thing is that I can use it over and over again. It sounds like the fancy release agents are a piece of cake to work with so I'll definitely go that route next.

How bout making a silicone mould instead? You could make one off one of your castings?

I had a few issues with the potting, but I was able to release it from the mold. We are making progress.

Looking good!

This thing looks great!

I have been waiting, somewhat patiently, for you to start production. Keep up the good work and for sharing your progress along the way, it has been fun seeing everything take shape.

Beat me to it. It's also in my bag of tricks.
