First Long Trip: New Jersey to Florida

Hello All! Well I did my first long ride last Sept 2012. I rode from the New Jersey Shore to Ft Lauderdale Florida to visit my 82 year old Mom. "Why dont you fly down, I'll send you the money for a plane ticket" Luv ya Mom! I camped along the way. (PS. The NJ Shore is NOTHING like that stupid TV show! We despise those people!)

The longest ride I have done previously was around 4 hours.
Now I've traveled through the US four times before and have been through every state, but that was looking out the window of a tour bus when my obscure grunge band http://youtu.be/bP1qnxnu4aI was touring the states back in 92-94. This time things were going to be a little different!

I had my 1990 BMW GSPD packed and gassed up, and was just waiting for my work schedule to open up so I could do the trip. I got the phone call on a Weds eve that my next job was on hold for a few weeks. I jumped on the bike early next morn and set sail for Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and the start of the Blue Ridge Mts. I arrived at my first campsite before dusk.

The RED line is South bound
The Blue line is North bound
#1 balloon is the first night camping Big Meadows Virginia
#2 balloon 2nd night camp
#3 balloon 3rd night camp outside Asheville N. Carolina
From balloon #3 to Ft Lauderdale star was done in one shot, all slabs in 13 hrs.
From Ft Lauderdale back to NJ was done in 2 shots with a camp midway at #4 balloon. The slab home was mind numbing to say the least.

The weather was sunny and perfect the entire trip except for a little evening drizzle 30 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale.

Total Miles Traveled: 3055 miles
States traveled thru: PA, VA, GA, SC, NC, DE, MD, FL
Highest Elevation: 6683 ft. Mt Mitchell N. Carolina
Coldest Temp: 35 Deg. Mt. Mitchell NC
Warmest Temp: 90 Deg
Total riding time:
5 1/2 days (3 on the blue ridge)
Nights camping: 4
Total meals purchased on trip: 0
Breakdowns: 1 burned out stator, 1 locked up back brake

Equipment list: Sleeping bag, back pack, stove, cooking fuel, kettle, spoon, food, water, earplugs, toilet paper, tools, BMW manual, air mattress, leatherman multi-tool, Gps, Tent, maps, compass, head lamp, lighter, empty gallon water jug, oil, clothing, small bible, tire pressure gauge, towel, solar powered cell phone charger, air pump, first aid kit, shaving kit, rain suit

Equipment failures:
Gps burned out, 1 boot sole destroyed, 1 air mattress. 1 Stator

Operator errors:. On day one, I pulled over on a gravely shoulder to check the map, while sitting on the bike my foot slipped and the bike fell over and I rolled down a 20 ft hill. The bike stayed where it was thank God, but was almost impossible to right due to the angle it was at on the hill. None the less a passerby pulled over to lend a hand. From there on out I put myself into "Ninja Rider mode" and errors like this soon disappeared. I regret not taking more time to ride through the Blue Ridge.

Sketchiest Moment: Hitting a truck tire retread at 75 mph

As the ride progressed I lightened my load as I felt I may have over packed. For my future trips I will bring a smaller tent and less clothing. The food took up a bit of space too and I could have purchased some along the way for the evenings dinners instead. My idea was to be completely self sufficient except for Petrol.

The Weird: So when I rolled into my last campsite on the Blue Ridge it seemed just like all the others, until I went down the little roadway to the tent plots and there were little kids on bikes everywhere and a lot of Rv's and people milling about being loud. Gypsies! Went to the other side of the mountain where they saw the bear last nite to pitch my tent instead.

Here's some pics.

I had new tires shipped to me Mums house in Florida
