Riding in large groups can clog up your filter quickly. I ran into this sort of problem riding AMA Enduros. (450 riders)

Solution? Filter Skins.
Filter skins are pre-oiled, pre-packaged breathable cloth covers that slip over your stock foam filter. Remove and replace daily or twice daily if needed. They are washable/reusable. They come in a pack of 3 or 4.
Very handy, quick and easy. Your air filter stays clean.

In the old days we'd carry a spare filter and keep another at the half way Gas/Lunch stop. Filter Skins make all that obsolete. They DO very slightly restrict breathing ... but on a four stroke not likely an issue.

That's been suggested to me before, but I've never tried one. I must, tho. Carrying extra filters takes up too much space. So thanks for the reminder!

Yeah, it's an oil burner. But the bigger problem was keeping on top of the air filter, a serious weak spot.
Looks like you had a great time!

As already posted, filter skins and a 685 that might be in your horizon are both easy fixes.

Last Saturday I rode out to Sam's farm in Whitmore Lake, where the Metro Trials Club holds their trials events, to do a recon of the sections before Sundays event.

In the background you can see the clay hill where 2 of the sections are located.

This is out in the woods on a ridge that overlooks 2 more sections on the side of a hill.
It was fun riding the single track trails on the KLR through the woods that connect the sections and I also rode across a large green pasture out to the sand hill section out back behind the clay hill.

Here is a picture of my 2001 Gas Gas 321.
The weather and conditions were perfect for Sundays event and I rode well and only dabbed 22 times all day out of a possible 200.
Another great thing about trials is it also makes you a better KLR rider !!!

Small World

I made the FF in Clarksdale,Ms and at Paris, Texas.
The Clarksdale one was a heck of a Party.

Are you going to make any of the RRRs this year?

I seriously considered one of the RRR this year but I just have too much going on with a few prior ride plans and with the Trials Event schedule.

420 miles to reserve.

Tomorrow is the Bent Fenders trials event in Flushing, Michigan which is a little North West of Flint, so I took a ride on the Klr to check out the sections.
It was a 180 mile round trip, with about 120 miles of highway, and it allowed me to finish off the tank of gas and get a fuel range to reserve and mpg number.

This tank of gas was with luggage and about 120 miles of highway @70-80 mph and the rest was back roads at 40-60 mph and with a 16 tooth sprocket, short windscreen and 30 psi in Anakee 2 tires.

The bike started sputtering at 420 miles on the odo so I flipped to reserve and went and filled up with 8.2 gallons of gas.(With reserve I could have went 500 miles.)

So I averaged 51 mpg on the tank.

Who would have ever thought it would take $32.00 to fill up a KLR !!! LOL !!

The bike felt great on the highway at 70-80mph and no buffeting with the short windshield even in various winds and behind trucks.

At 70 mph I am turning 4500 rpms.

Hey Gas Guy,
What top rear rack is that (The piece that you mounted the LEDs to)? I would like something with slots all around for strapping a dry bag on the rear but everything I see online sticks out way to far on the sides. Yours is just what I'm looking for. Thanks

Dirtnrocks,
That is the rack for my top box and it is all from Caribou Cases motorcycle luggage.
Check out the website and it should have all the info you need.
