Looking forward to your continuing adventure.

Hi John,
I found your ride report this past sumer while I was laid up with a broken leg after getting hit by a car that failed to stop at an intersection. It provided lot's and lot's of entertainment and some mild escapism from my situation. I'm pretty much healed now, and looking forward to following your continuing adventure in real time. Have fun!

Hi Johnny Locks,

Nice to have some company from the yah you betcha north country. My Great Aunt Ada told me about my Irish forefathers who lived in Minnesota before homesteading in the Dakota territory. A family of 12 Irish Catholics crammed in a tarpaper shack with uncommunicative Scandinavian immigrant neighbors in the Minnesota winters back in the 1800's makes my trips sound like weak sauce. I can only imagine what my Great-Great-Grandmother must have been thinking that first winter. You dragged me away from Ireland for this?

I will do my best to entertain you this winter. Here's to a healed up leg and more fun riding after the spring thaw. It will be here before you know it.

Glad to have you along amigo.

Saludos,
Tio Juan

Since you have so much time on your hands, waiting to get on an airplane; What's your take on the XR250 vs the Sherpa? I think the "L" has a 6 speed, yes? I think the XR is electric start. What about seat height, taller than the Sherpa? Good 250 class travel bike?

My flight to South America technically leaves tomorrow just after midnight, but really this is my last day in the US for a while. Time to unload the XR, disconnect the battery and drain the float bowl:

The reason Iím heading out from Phoenix is because my sister has a winter home here where I can stash the truck, bike, trailer and tools while Iím away for however long my money lasts. It would be nice to head out from home but my situation is different from most folks since I live in such a remote place. The nearest airport to Bassett Nebraska is 150 miles away and there is no public transportation or bus service. Also Spirit airlines is one of the cheapest airlines to Colombia and they have hubs in Phoenix, DFW and Ft. Lauderdale Florida, so those are other optional cities. I donít have a safe place to park my truck anywhere but here, so Phoenix it is.

Itís crunch time today so time to check the internet and remind myself what Colombian currency looks like. A quick refresher is always a good idea to see what current exchange rates are as well. Googling US dollar to Colombian peso shows 1883 pesos to the dollar. I like to convert the Colombian bills into something I can relate to.

The 1000 peso bill is worth 50 cents:

the 2000 peso bill is roughly a dollar:

10,000 pesos 5 bucks, 20,000 pesos 10bucks, and 50,000 pesos or 50 mil as they say in Colombia is roughly 25 dollars:

Another quick check of the internet shows a map of the Fort Lauderdale airport so I can see where Iíll be running to catch my connecting flight to Colombia from the international terminal 4. I also did a quick google search to see which bus to take to get from the Medellin airport to Poblado where my Sherpa is stashed. You donít see too many ride reporters go over these kinds of things, but knowing that you can catch a bus from an airport will save you a lot of money over cab fare.

I have to run out and get some last minute things like oil filters, rechargable batteries, ethernet dongle, that sort of thing so gotta go.

More laterÖ.

Saludos,
Juan Arizona
