Glad you're in SA

John

Glad you're back in SA. It was nice to see Mike from Motolombia in one of you shots. I spent Christmas at his hostal in Cali last year.

Looking forward to hearing more tales from the road

Took off from Medellin yesterday morning heading south into the coffee country towards Jardin. By 11 AM it was raining hard with dark clouds south so I cut east out of the rain up into the mountains and rode some great roads. If the dark clouds were to the right at an intersection I headed left. It was great to be out in the countryside again where the living is easy. Nothing like stopping for lunch at a roadside stand and drinking a soda and eating freshly made empanadas kicking back listening to smooth Latin music.

This afternoon finds me near Guatape at the base of El Peñol on the lake:

at the Mi Casa guest house. I stayed here last Spring and it is just as mellow as it was then. Here is the view of the lake from the balcony:

I decided to knock off early today and study Spanish and relax lakeside. A dorm bed here is 20,000 pesos, or a little over ten dollars. It is mid-week so only one other guest here, Joel a nice young man from Minnesota who has been teaching English to the indigenous kids in the mountains of Ecuador for 3 months. He is touring Colombia for a month before heading back for the holidays to his parents house in South Dakota. Not far from where I live. I checked the weather back home and Joel is going to be in for a rude surprise. Might go for a ride over to the waterfalls down the way later this afternoon. It was raining and cloudy yesterday so I didn’t get out my camera.

Sean, the owner of the guesthouse is putting in a large hammock off the lower deck next week. 12 feet by 12 feet. He needs some stairs built down the hill so I will come back in a week or two and put it in for him after they put up the hammock. Free food and lodging sounds like a fair trade to me.

If you don’t want to work while you’re on the road, make sure never to mention what you do for a living.

Saludos,
Juan Peñol

We just returned from two weeks wandering around Mexico. In Jesus Maria & San Blas it was in the 90's....Today, here in South Dakota it's 17 degrees, 12" of fresh snow & going below zero tonight!

Say Hi to Joel, from another South Dakota resident!

Some pics from Guatape, the colonial town down the way from where I’m spending the night. They are decorating the place for Christmas:

Navidad festivities actually kick off at midnight on December 1st with huge fireworks celebrations. Rockets, M80s, all the good stuff. Sort of like midnight New Years Eve back in the States.

Lots of colorful houses down here:

with a variety of vehicles parked out front:

and a variety of transport options if you don’t have a motorcycle:

Nice Catholic church:

more local color:

And looking back at El Peñol:

I thought about climbing it again, but I just climbed 10 stories back in Medellin a couple days ago with a 16 foot stepladder I rented to paint the second floor foyer in Albert’s apartment, so I’m thinking I’ve had enough stairmaster work this week.

more later……

Saludos,
Juan Guatape

"La envidia es mejor despertarla que sentirla" Spanish words by a french green car that once was brand new.

Awesome colors in oriente antioquenio and although still Spanish colonial the architecture is very different from what you see in suroeste (zona cafetera) with their prevalent balconies.

If I may offer a suggestion, Santuario-El Carmen de Viboral-La Ceja would get you on your way to Montebello. From there to Abejorral is very twisted (have your vest handy) and you could descend to Rio Cauca at La Pintada and make your way northwest to Jardin. Nice tour of two cordilleras.

Wherever you go you'll have a good time and we'll enjoy your report

Today’s ride is dedicated to Trespalacios. I checked the ride report this morning and wrote down the names of the towns he had suggested to see if I could actually find any of them. Headed out this morning from Guatape. Looking back at El Peñol.

Stopped in Santuario for gas and directions to Carmen de Viboral. The guy pointed to a dirt road that looked like someones driveway. Headed down it and took the forks in the road that looked most used. Eventually there was a huge sign overhead that indicated I was indeed heading to Carmen de Viboral.

The dirt road was fairly decent although muddy in spots:

Beautiful pastoral countryside:

No traffic out here in the sticks. Just me and the cows:

They had blocked off the center of the city and were setting up tents for a big fiesta, so I took what looked like a promising road on the outskirts of town. Headed down until this dumptruck was blocking the way:

The road repair out here consists of a dump load of mud and rock in the bad spots and let the traffic pound it down as they drive over it. So I found myself coming around corners at times and thump thumping over piles of crap. Anyway the guy told me that this wasn’t the way to La Ceja and pointed me where he thought it was.

More coming…..
