We got into Colonia and it was much warmer, very muggy and uncomfortable in the riding gear. We scoped out the camping options, & with the municipal campground closed that limited our options.

Stopping to buy a few stickers and figure out where we might go. We ended up stopping at the tourist office and the 3 of us road out towards the bullring along the coast with a vague plan to go camp 14km out of town.

We stopped along the way for a few photos, where there was a nice section of sand beach. JD decided that the hostal would be almost as cheap as camping, so he headed back to town. We continued on out to the campground and found a quiet place next to the water.

It looks cloudy today with rain the next few days.

Wish it was sunny and dry forecast, as we would like to camp cheaply before heading into the city , but we would need to dry our gear out thoroughly before it goes into storage.
JD hopefully we will catch you for lunch today. We woke up to the haunting sound of owls in the trees nearby.

John,
A quick note about putting thumpers to sleep for long periods. When I
complained to my favorite cousin, a 90+ year old mechanic, about my
lawnmower always running like crap when I finally got it started after months
of non use, he suggested that after use, I leave it on the compression
stroke. I have used that advice on all my thumpers with good results, not
withstanding the alcohol/gas we have today.

Looking forward to the next sequel. Here or there.

That may help by leaving the valve springs extended and minimizing compression chamber volume. More critical, however, would be voiding the gasoline from the carburetor and oiling the combustion chamber, with the latter bordering on superfluous for a six month storage.

South America and back on a 250 Super Sherpa Minimalist Adventure

JD it was good to sit down and say goodbye today. There's some nice places east of there.

Have a great commute back to work from.....bWEN-oh-SIGH-Rez

We might turn our crankshaft to TDC and drain the float bowl, unhook the battery, that's it.

Hey you Nebraska folk, “get down here and plant some crops.”

This place reminds me so much of home it isn’t funny.

Nothing but cattle, crops and grain silos:

Stopped in Carmelo for a bite to eat. I had a really good omelet and papas fritas (french fries). Stepped outside and took this pic of the central park in Carmelo:

I was still with Hektoglider and Thorne. Headed down to the river and I got this pic of the ferry that will take me to Buenos Aires on Sunday:

Hektoglider and Thorne have iPod touches and they work great but are a little small for watching netflix movies. My MacBook Air has served me well for two years, but it´s been wonky for the last week. The battery is getting tired and it is expensive. Plus I don´t really need a full blown computer to just download photos, post ride reports and surf the web. I also like the idea of a touchscreen with no keyboard to collect dirt.
Try typing a ride report in your iPad mini before you head back to South America. You may end up missing your keyboard

Let me know if you make it to the Lair of the Dragon

My laptop just came back to life after being dead for a day and a half.

I used an iPod touch back in 2010 when I rode to Panama and back. I know it is a little slower to peck out ride reports on a touchscreen, but I didn't find it too bad. I like the idea of not having a keyboard that dust and sand can get into in the tent. Plus the 10 hour battery life is a big plus when you're camping a lot. There is no perfect internet device. They all wear out eventually. Case in point is this laptop I am typing on. Which is another good reason to take something smaller and less expensive than this Macbook Air.

I look forward to meeting you in person the next time I get out to the Carolinas.

Saludos,
Tio Juan

Hola Ramón,

Yes, Uruguay is a friendly and beautiful country. Wish you were here. Look forward to seeing you again down here when you return for more riding. Should be fun!

Hey you guys,

Thanks for filling in with some nice pics while my computer was down. Look forward to seeing you and Thorne at the 2015 South America Super Sherpa Rally. Hopefully there will be more than 3 bikes next year.

Buena Suerte,
Juan Sherpa
