Finally made it back to our little base camp in the north woods . It's nice to have a driveway to pull into. Lots of snow here still, but glad to be back , having got the flights and travel done before the Semana Santa holidays kicked in.
I will probably start my own thread, and lay out some of those prime Fuji X10 photos. Biggest problem for not starting it is I can't upload to smug mug anymore. My laptop can't pull it off since the new upgrades or whatever.
If I figure it out ($ new unit $) then I will lay out the mumbo jumbo fairly heavy, a bit of BS to scratch your head, and some decent photos.

Hi Kari,

Glad you and the thorny one made it home safely.

I would email smugmug tech support and see if they can offer a workaround for your laptop:

http://help.smugmug.com

They are really good. When I emailed them they got right back to me. My account was due to be paid by credit card automatically and I wrote to tell them that I lost and cancelled that credit card and please don't erase my account for non-payment while I am in South America or the people reading this ride report would come looking for me with hatchets.

They got right back to me and told me no worries they would move the payment date to May after I could get a new credit card. Really nice of them.

You need to get those X10 photos up on a ride report so I can drool over them again. Or you are welcome to post some here and listen to people complain like last year. (I still don't quite understand why anyone minds backroad Andes road porn no matter what the source.)

Your Sherpa pal,
John
P.S. What did Canadian customs think about the two kilos of mate in your luggage?

Really enjoy reading about your adventures it is always entertaining and educational. Do you have some projects lined up already this summer to help fund your next trip in SA?
If you find yourself in southern Ohio this summer contact me I always have projects and an extra room at my home.

Take care,
Paul

Question thanks john

John,
Zen and the art of making do. Love it! You list is now taped on the top of my kitchen table.

I'm leaving in July. My Alpo and Kibble and Bits retirement plan. I have a lap top, a free point and shoot camera, and an account on SmugMug, but I'm about stupid trying to use this stuff. Do you use SmugMug to upload pictures to ADVrider? Is it as time consuming as I think it is.

Have a good summer. Hope to meet you and your friends someday.
Regards
Bob Shaffer (Black Top Bob)

Hi Paul,

It is so hard to say, but there are several ADVriders that have contacted me. I will put you on the list. So far I am starting in Texas and working my way east to Tennessee and the Carolinas.

I have no idea what people want done or how long it will take. But I will put you on the list. Most people say not to work for friends or family but that's all I did last summer and I had the time of my life wandering around the country buffing out people's houses.

Its a great way to spend the summer and earn enough to head back for more Latin America riding.

Even if I don't have time to be of service, I will drop by to say hi if my travels take me through Ohio.

Kindest regards,
John

Hi Bob,

You're probably smarter than me and I was able to stumble through. It can be confusing at first to figure out how to upload pictures from your laptop and then copy them to a ride report. I did a search to figure it out way back when.

I remember that the one thing that wasn't clear was the fact that I had to hand type in:

Once I figured that out, I could type out my ride report in a separate notepad window, add the

Then copy and paste all the writing and code into the ride report window.

I started out typing this directly in the ADVrider ride report window. But it only takes a couple of times getting disconnected from the router or some such and losing all you have written as it disappears before you figure out it is better to write long posts on your computer and copy and paste it into ADVrider ride reports.

I really look forward to reading your future ride reports. And yes it takes some time to write and upload and link photos, but you get faster at it. Plus you can always hit the edit button in the lower righthand corner of a post and change things if you post something wrong. That is what I do. I whip these posts out, post them and edit them afterward. Plus it helps if you don't take it too seriously and just have fun with it.

Hope this helps.
John

I filled out the form and checked "yes" for brining in the food related items. Then at secondary screening they asked what I had, to which I replied "just some peanuts and some tea" ...ok go ahead.
The guy xraying the pack backed up the conveyor belt for a second look, but other than that, it was fine.
I stopped at David's Tea in the Toronto Airport and asked them how much is there green Mate, then asked how much is a Kilo? It was about a hunnerd bux !
Still working on my technical difficulties. These computers can do wonders, but they can also drive a person crazy trying to do a simpke task sometimes. I do need my own RR for all the photos and stuff I have to share. People enjoy your "way" of thinking and perspective on life, and your RR should remain for that , free of pollution from others. I totally get that. The fault was all mine and i hold no ill feelings whatsoever. While riding with you and posting some stuff, I have become re-inspired . Your right , the hi-Rez photos need to get shared.

Hola Ramón,

Your brother tried so hard to teach me Uruguayo customs. I need work.

It's not easy sipping mate and holding a thermos. Much less remembering how to pronounce double LL's like SH
and Y's like J or SH.

I look forward to returning to Carmelo for more lessons next fall,

Saludos,
Tio Juancito

Here in Raleigh NC. if I can offer assistance or buy a cold one, let me know.

Go to the mountains occasionally as well as the coast. Great part of the location.

Safe travels.

p.s. wifey wants a new tile back splash...maybe we can work something out.

John, I am looking forward to your learning and comments on ease of use, practicality, etc of the mini-Ipad for your adv reporting and linking of pictures.
