I've sent parts to travelers in South America via postal service, and the rates weren't too bad. Would it make sense to locate some used parts stateside and see about mailing them? Or would fork parts be too outsize?

Edit: saw your edit about having parts sent.

Hi adventurebound9517,

Glad to have you along. If ADVriding was easy, everybody would be doing it. It helps if you're not too bright and have an unrealistically enthusiastic outlook on life.

Saludos,
Juanito

Well what a sucky development. It sounds like you have it under control. Frankenbikes are the best IMHO. Don't hesitate to hack it together for the short term at least. Just save all the left over bits you can stand to carry! We'll be looking for updates and more pix.

Just wait until whatever is left of the Sherpa, tied chickens and all, safely arrives on land before ordering more parts LOL

Just search Sherpa forks.
Hi slowoldguy,

Thanks for the links! I have to get the Sherpa to the mainland and see what's available locally. I have heard from other ride reports of the massive trouble getting things delivered in Colombia with customs. Sometimes more hassle than it's worth. So I am going to try and find some sort of front end solution down here before I go that route.

Glad to have you along as always. You Texas boys rock.

Gracias amigo,
Juan Alamo

Sorry to read of the Sherpa sandwich.

Looking like help is coming through which is cool, only thing we can offer is is support and a donation if you want to help her roll again.

Cheers Andi & Ellen

I can guarantee you the mighty Kawi can be fixed in there Lots of cargo trucks go back to medellin from turbo with open space I bet you can talk to a camionero at the port and negociate a ride to the city of the eternal springs for you and the sherpa. Medellin and paisas won't dissapoint you Juanito

There's lots of bike bits in Medellin, you know you have Al (turtleshead) and Federico (motoshop) in El Poblado and they're connected with the moto community. There's also members here in Medellin connected with the Japanese bike shops..I'm sure you'll have options once you get to Medellin.

John, give a shout if you have problems getting the bike to Medellin. I'm sure we can figure something out.

Whew. What a mess.

Sure looks like Medillin is the hot ticket though for a fix up.

The Sherpa is a 2002, but they all use the same front end. Not likely to find Sherpa parts down here, but I have no problem grafting another front end on this mule. Importing parts is too much hassle. Others have tried and it is a customs nightmare. I will find something down here. I can feel it.

The bike has taken a beating as have I. But it's all part of the fun on the roads less traveled.

Saludos,
Juan Capurgana
Sorry about the mishap; probably time for fork oil change anyway, right. Now you just get new (used) forks. My guess is that you're up and running in a week or so. Plus you get to hang in one of the nicest cities in S. America. No worries.

Hi Andi and Ellen,

You guys rock! Thanks so much for the help. I felt bad that I was so far away in southern Mexico when Ellen did the DR boogie down the road. Appreciate the Kiwi love. ADVrider rules. I've gotten lots of good ideas already. As you well know, everything works out in the end. Hope to see you down the road sometime.

Gracias mis amigos de aventura,
Juan Sherpa

Hola Jimmex,

You got that right! I look forward to my time in Colombia. This is a first rate ADVrider destination. I am having more fun with a wrecked bike than I thought was possible. I look forward to seeing what the future holds. So far the support has been amazing. I might have to wreck the Sherpa more often.

Su Hermano de aventura,
Juanito

Hola Ricardo,

When I get closer to Medellin, I will give you a holler. Right now I am stuck in Capurgana waiting for the slow cargo boat to take the Sherpa to Turbo. I'm not sure how long it will take.

Good to know that lots of cargo trucks are deadheading back to Medellin. I am sure it won't be a problem getting to the big city. I would rather be in Medellin hanging out fixing the bike than in Turbo. And if someone has a garage I can take the bike apart in, so much the better.

Gracias amigo,
Juanito
