Slovenia-Croatia-Montenegro. Newbe

Hi,
We are planning to go on mid May to those countries.
In spite of the 5 hours drive We were highly recommended to rent the bikes in Germany.
Does it make sense? Are there any good bike renting places in Slovenia?
Interested in site seeing and a little bit of hiking if possible.
Any "dont miss" roads, views, places or trails?
Is mid May might be problematic, whether wise?
The plan is to have 10 gross days (with flights)
Is it to much to drive? Can someone recommend on a full cyclic route?

Excuse me for the Question attack. J

Thanks.

Thanks Francs

Do you know if it's really a big difference between renting a Bike in Germany or Slovenia?

Thanks Again.

Thumb smtours

+! for SMTours.

Matej, the owner of SMTours, is very knowledgeable and helpful. He's a trustworthy guy who is also an avid mortorcycle rider. He has good bikes, decent rates and tons of local knowledge - he runs tours all over the Balkans.

Note: I receive nothing from him for this endorsement. My wife and I ride two up in Europe a month at a time on our own. We have ridden on two of his tours. Both tours exceeded my highest expectations at every turn - all day, every day - and I am not a "tour kinda guy" at all.

In Croatia, visit this park and see an incredible sculpture by Mother Nature.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plitvic..._National_Park
There are many small hotels, B&Bs, and camping areas. There are two hotels (as of a few years ago) in the park. Functional but clean and a short walk to the park entrance.

The coastal route is very scenic. Water so blue you won't believe it. Dubrovnik is worth a visit as well, especially the Old City.

Mid May the weather can be unpredictable (temperatures can be from 5-25C).
In Slovenija you should visit Soča valey (Bovec), Logarska dolina, Bohinj (there is plenty opportunity to hike at those places, but mid may is not "the season") , seaside (Piran) .
Inland Croatia (Plitvice) and specialy Montenegro inland can be extremly cold in mid may (it can snow) .

sites to see

All the places mentioned above plus:

Slovenia:
Wine region: Brda
Vrsic Pass; Ride over the Julian Alps, 100 switchbacks, all numbered. But in May? Maybe not possible.
Eat zlikrofi, a ravioli filled with cheese, bacon and chives.
Old town Ljubljana and the castle

Croatia inland:
Licka Kuca restaurant about 3km from the Hotel Plitvice is great for roasted meats at moderate prices. The hotel is good, too.

Croatia coastal:
Pula - one of the best most complete Roman coliseums to be found anywhere; a nice yacht harbor, too.
Opatija - small beautiful town with nice scenic roads; ride coastal route between Pula and Opatija
Hvar Island and town of Hvar - get there on the 15-20 minute ferry from Drvenik; have lunch on the small harbor at Gusarska Luka restaurant in the village of Sucarj on Hvar island.
Dubrovnik - many say it's too touristy, but in May, it'll be very nice. A nice outdoor bar with the best view is Buza. Hotel Perla on the Lapad Peninsula is good.

Montenegro:
Petrovac
Durmitor National Park - check for snow in passes in May, some roada are gravel if you go exploring off the main road.
Zabljak village, set high in the mounatins has excellent scenery, some good nightlife and interesting bars
Lovcen National Park - lots of nice scenry and twisty roads.
Kotor - do ride the switchbacks uphill to or downhill from the park. The road's narrow and overlooks Kotor and Kotor Bay.
Sveti Stefan

Matej at SMTours can arrange all kinds of hotels, and a great route for you as an "unguided tour". He did that for us as an add-on of a Slovenian tour once and it was perfect. He had a route sheet, maps and gps routes for input to our Garmin 550 set up just right.

It's possible (usually since 1st May, depend on weather) .
