Depends on the bike of course.
This assumes that all vehicles have vertical sides, which is almost never true.

I have many years of experience splitting with bikes that have hard bags on them and handlebar width hasn't helped much in determining if I would fit through or not. And yes, I've bumped a few cars (which I'm not proud of).

If you're riding a bike with hard bags, make sure you're going to fit though the gaps before squeezing into them, especially at red lights. My XR650 fits in a much tighter space than my KTM with the Touratech bags attached. You don't want to bump anybody.

My own rule for splitting in moving traffic is that as soon as I feel like shifting out of second gear, it's time to blend in with traffic. A lot of riders go faster than that, but I feel unsafe splitting, once traffic gets over about 35 mph.

Geez. I split at 85 if they are going 75. But only if there's plenty of room.

My side bags on the tiger are so stupid wide there has to be LOTS of room. Otherwise I'm a mini-car.

One of these days I'm gonna come up on a traffic light and try and filter with my car. I can feel it commin'.

Bolt - that is an awesome bike!!!
I inherited a 77 CB550F I'm doing a resto and cafe conversion. FUN!!

That's so funny, I've had the same feeling. Problem is my car is a Dodge Ram! Think it'll fit?

I grew up in the UK, and now ride in Mexico. I always filter, but as I've got older and slower to heal, I mostly filter up to lights in town, or on either shoulder on the highway if the traffic's stopped or at a crawl.

I have been taken out twice (years ago). Once by a woman who spotted a parking spot in town and just spun out left as I was passing her, and the other was a few years later when a guy opened his car door into me while parked at the kerb. No serious injuries from either, but it made me a lot more aware.

I was following a couple of friends on Harleys through heavy moving traffic, and they were totally without concern, just going as fast as they could into every little gap. Needless to say I held back. I knew I'd catch them in the next straight or corner anyway

Filtering's great but always assume a car will merge or turn or the asshole driving will spit or toss a cigarette when you're least expecting it.

I may be one of the ones who "don't know", but ...
I believe that lane splitting IS NOT EXPLICITLY PROHIBITED in CA by statute.
However, it is also NOT EXPLICITLY APPROVED by statute either.
Therefore it is wise to be careful and reasonable as to when you do it.

My personal feeling is that if traffic is moving smoothly at some reasonable speed (in my case above 30mph) then I stay in traffic. You may not think that is 'reasonable', but there we disagree. If, however, traffic is stop and go, then I'll split.

Now there is the issue of when 'splitting' becomes 'weaving in and out' between moving cars. IMHO, that can be construed by LEOs as reckless or dangerous driving. I also believe that it, more than lane splitting at lower speeds, is really what pisses off drivers and makes them anti-motorcycle.

Just my $0.02

Well, there are car mirrors to consider...but my point is, yes be aware of your bags, but rule of thumb is pretty much, if you can easily get the bars through, the rest will follow.
I've been splittin' lines on BMW (opposed cylinders) for at least 30 years with only one slight tap of a saddlebag...

Whatever the speed, it's legal to share a lane on a moto with any vehicle if there is space allowing for it, and that means passing in that lane.
Drivers get pissed because they scare if they're not paying attention to what's around them. Granted blowing by a driver's door can be a rude practice.
Part of the etiquette is to try and help make them aware of you. It takes some practice and awareness.

Just arrived this morning. Dip shit truckers left the gas on from OHIO to CA with 3/4 tank of fuel. Almost empty when it arrived. Took a bit of drying out to get it started. But she found 100mph somewhere between Lucerne Valley and Barstow in no time ! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I love owning my own 35 mile piece of asphalt. It belongs to me and Robertsons cemet ! And they like filtering
