Cool!

Quito is a long way up. Bring a down jacket for sure. It's cold up here at the Middle of the World. I don't think I am going to spend a lot of time in Quito, I don't like the cold. I will likely spend one night. I've teamed up with Boris again and he and I are planning a ride to Cuenca and then we plan to head for the Peruvian Coast where it is warm desert. More my style! I can see all the cold I want at home in Shediac.

Have a very Happy New Year and enjoy your trip.

Great spot Paul, thanks for the tip!

Wonderful hosts, peace and quiet, Hot showers with water pressure

Looks like we'll have a good group, Dylan, Brice, Alison, Tony, Franki, Boris, maybe Steve and myself and rumors of another rider from France on a Sherpa 250 and our three German backpacker friends, Jana, Lawrence and Nikko

Should be fun!

Happy New Year

Dwight

That would be a lot of fun to meet you guys. As a former Air Traffic Controller it's nice to meet people in the aviation industry. Angele and I are always looking for an excuse for a party and I can't think of a better one than a return from South America.

New Years Party

We had a wonderful Party here at the Hacienda at the Middle of the World. Seven riders in all showed up. Alison, Bryce, Dylan, Boris, Tony, Franki, Allain on his 250 and myself. What a great group.

The hacienda put on a big supper. They had a huge bonfire complete with a effigy of Viejo Anos (Old Year) that they burned in the fire. Down here that's the tradition. You see people at the side of the road collecting money to buy gasoline and gun powder to stuff their effigy's with to burn in the fire. They burn up the Old Year to welcome in the New Year. In the days leading up to New Year you see effigy's everywhere. On car hoods, porches, in trees etc, all over the place.

I didn't take any photos last night. I'm not a fan of pictures of people drinking so I left the camera in the room on purpose. I can tell you though that $1.00 for a quart of beer and $7.00 bottles of rum or whiskey combined with the thin air at 9000 feet make for a good party. We had a lot of fun.

I Know $1.50/gallon. Crazy!

Happy New Year, Len.

Thanks for your words of encouragement when I was in El Salvador. It really helped.

Hi Jody

I was thinking of you and Port A just yesterday and wondering if you were still following along.

Great trip, amazing places and people.

I'll be back to Port A one day!

Quito

We left the Hacienda today, I rode with Dylan and Bryce and then Alison arrived here later. We are in a Hostel in Quito, called Casa Bambu, that Boris recommended. Thanks Boris! What a great spot. It is very clean and nice and has a roof top deck with an outstanding view of this huge city. $15/night for a private room, $7 for a dorm. Amazing!

Our ride only took an hour or so in light traffic. I passed a van with BC Plates along the way. I gave the guy a tap of the horn and a wave as I went by. I think he understood I was a Canadian bike.

We had breakfast at the Hacienda. It was cool outside and the cat took adavantage of Franki's iPAD to keep his bum warm.

Dylan and Bryce, ready to go.

The ride across Quito from North to South was good, light traffic thanks to it being New Years Day

Then we got to the incredibly steep street the Casa Bambu is on.

We made it safe and sound to their garage.

Check out the amazing view from the rooftop deck!

Ping Pong or Pool anyone?

Bryce noticed a McDonalds not far away as we rode in so I went for a walk and took these shots of this beautiful city. Quito is the cleanest Latin American city I've seen.

KFC!!!!

Mickey D's (Where I had supper tonight)

Looking back up toward our hostel. We're just below the green building and a bit to the right. Long climb back from McDonalds in thin air

Houses built up the mountainside

Wide Streets

Lots of parkland in our area

The start of the climb back up to the hostel from the park

The street across the bottom of our steep hill.

I know I showed this before but this is really steep when you just had a 1/4 pounder combo and are not used to the elevation. That is a Toyota corolla coming over the top

I am staying here for a couple nights trying to figure out what's next. Franki, Tony and Boris headed for Cuenca today or at least toward Cuenca. I think I'm going to the Coast.

Stay tuned......
