That's a GFQ. Verizon says I need to pay about $60 to get a month of Canada added to my plan. No pics, no data, just text and voice. I wonder if Verizon is on the Rock. If not, will my $60 Verizon investment allow me to roam for no extra charge?

Are there wifi hot spots near civilization?

Will I have to climb the pole like Oliver Wendell Douglas?

Ms. Barb, aka Barbsironbutt gets "Canada as Home" for five or ten bucks a month. She works within sight of the border, so half the towers that she can hit are Canadian. She uses AT&T. No data, but voice and text. From what I hear, Rogers, Bell and Telus are it for The Rock. Rogers is unlikely to work outside of St. Johns, some say.

We had very good service with Bell on the Rock. From what I've heard, Rogers offers poor coverage.

This will be my first trip to Newfoundland, but in my experience in the rest of Canada, there's generally WiFi available at either the local town hall or library. In Nova Scotia, they have signs posted to this effect. I've had pretty good luck sniping WiFi outside public libraries in Ontario.

Forget Rogers altogether. It certainly won't work in NL. Telus and Bell are your best bets. Although, I wouldn't piss in the gums of a bell rep if their teeth were on fire.

One of the great lies: "I'm from the telephone company, and I'm here to help."

However, I did find a Bell Canada SIM card on Ebay for $5.50 shipped, so I guess I'm going that direction with a no-contract plan while I'm up there.

On the Fourth of July, 1806
We set sail from the sweet Cove of Cork
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks
For the Grand City Hall in New York
'Twas a wonderful craft
She was rigged fore and aft
And oh, how the wild wind drove her
She stood several blasts
She had twenty seven masts
And they called her The Irish Rover

We had one million bags of the best Sligo rags
We had two million barrels of stones
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides'
We had four million barrels of bones
We had five million hogs
six million dogs
Seven million barrels of porter
We had eight million bales of old nanny goat tails
In the hold of the Irish Rover

There was awld Mickey Coote
Who played hard on his flute
And the ladies lined up for a set
He would tootle with skill
For each sparkling quadrille
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet
With his smart witty talk
He was cock of the walk
As he rolled the dames under and over
They all knew at a glance
When he took up his stance
That he sailed in The Irish Rover

There was Barney McGee
From the banks of the Lee
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Johnny McGurk
Who was scared stiff of work
And a man from Westmeath called Malone
There was Slugger O'Toole
Who was drunk as a rule
And Fighting Bill Tracy from Dover
And your man, Mick McCann
From the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover

For a sailor its' always a bother in life
It's so lonesome by night and by day
That he longs for the shore
and a pretty young whore
Who will melt all his troubles away
Oh, the noise and the rout
Swillin' poiteen and stout
For him soon the torment's over
Of the love of a maid he is never afraid
An old salt from the Irish Rover

We had sailed seven years
When the measles broke out
And the ship lost its way in the fog
And that whale of a crew
Was reduced down to two
Just myself and the Captain's old dog
Then the ship struck a rock
Oh Lord! what a shock
The bulkhead was turned right over
Turned nine times around
And the poor old dog was drowned
I'm the last of The Irish Rover

French Shore Archeology

This may be a bit of a wade for some, but it has pics of sites around the "French Shore," the eastern segment of the Great Northern Peninsula. The site isn't the easiest to navigate around, but the knowledge you'll gain about the people is amazing.

http://niche-canada.org/member-proje...rd/pnhome.html

I've modded the route to take in as much of these outports as possible.

That is fantastic Tim! I can't wait to delve deeper into early NFLD history!

This may be helpful to you.
Mzcountryboy and Goodoleguzzi took the logging roads from Croque to Conche and i know they live by the GPS and had tracks.

If I still had every dollar I spent on motorbikes I would be a richer man but a poorer person.
