Final Drive Vent Question
I have an 03 1150 GS Adventure with 66,000 miles on it.
Because of my internet reading I rebuilt my Final Drive and Driveshaft. Not long after the rebuild my big seal started leaking a bit. I thought that it might have been because of using Synthetic Lube. I very carefully changed the seal and used non synthetic lube in it. I did not see any more leaks. Saturday morning we had our first cold snap. The last time I rode the bike it was 100 degrees. Saturday it was about 50 degrees and I rode about 200 miles. I noticed that my seal was leaking again. It may have been worse this time. ![]() My question, could my vent be stopped up causing pressure to build and forcing oil past seal? I'm sure that there would be more chance of this because of the colder temps. How do I remove and check vent? Thanks, Don

I have little to say

Don't know the reason for the leak but it surely isn't because of synthetic GL-5.

Flush FDs with ATF after draining and before refilling with fresh GL-5.

When you replaced the seal, did you make sure to only install it so it's flush with the housing? I found if you push it in too far it will leak.

And this, my friends, is why preventive maintenance on the Final Drive is a bad idea. If it is not broken, do not fix it.
