Can't Ride To D2D? Now You Can Fly

Starting next summer anyway: http://www.ktuu.com/news/news/feds-a...w/-/index.html

May be as many as 9 flight between Fairbanks and Dawson City Yukon.

Not sure that the flights will be open to the general public. Starting next year, Holland America will no longer be bussing people from Alaska over the Top of the World to Dawson, they are going to fly them using Air North. Air North does have flights to Dawson two days a week during the summer but I think these new flights are special charters just for Holland America guests.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. Any Idea about how many fewer buses per week that might mean over TOW?

I'm also curious about the status of the paving of TOW we might encounter next summer.

Thanks, Mark H.

Not sure about the TOW, but it does mean the Westmark in Tok and one of the roadhouses (not owned by Holland but used to do a lot of business with them) will be closed, as well as fewer tourists in general going through the region.

As far as busses, as far as right now there won't be any HAP buses going over the highway, assuming they get the flights figured out in time.

Bluhduh That's a bummer for Chicken and Tok though...

Like Skierd mentioned that means less business rolling through those areas of Alaska that don't get as much traffic as a whole.

I can see why the big tour companies would want to fly to avoid that section but a damn shame for the tourists that don't get to see the beauty of the TOW. But then again they're in busses anyway...

The bad part of the whole change is the huge loss of revenue for Susan in Chicken. Likely a bus a day in each direction, 35/50 people/bus.

I asked Susan about this last year and she said she was pleased with this decision. The buses account for, trying to remember correctly, but 40% of her business and 60% or more of her stress. I do remember being surprised at the percentage of her business these buses actually were.

It's my understanding, from reading several articles on the topic, that Holland America is doing this to allow their travelers more time in Fairbanks and other locales, rather then spending time trying to see out the dirty windows of a tour bus (I added the "dirty window part") for effect....

Eek More Pavement... ;(

What will we call it then... Just "A2D"? Seems like the dust and mud between Chicken and Dawson is what seperates the men from the boys and the WOMEN from well... the boys.

What will we do with a bunch of ADV bikes with street tires on them? Shoots maybe we can just make it a Harley festival...

Closing the hotel in Tok will save a lot of money. Skipping two long days on a tour bus will make the tourists happier, and the tour shorter meaning a faster turn for HAP, meaning more excur$ion opportunities for both sides of the line.
