Not to sound unhelpful, you do realize you are asking a 30 second question which requires a 30 minute answer.
Lots to these GPS gizmo's and related software. Might help if you were to narrow your question some.
Really need to know a little more about what software you are using, what type of files and what problems you are encountering. Does the software see (communicate) with the GPS for example?
You might try looking at the stickies and try the search to gleam some info in the meantime.
The 276 is a great unit (and useful) but it has been out of production for quit a while. Kind of like asking how does Windows Visa work?

I have had a 276C for 8 years and it is a great unit but as said, you need to be more specific. It is easy to work with it using MapSource. Do you have that? Just run that program, plug it in and play and come back with some questions if you need it. If you want to route, you'll need a route-able map like City Navigator or something similar...
