Go Pro or Drift HD

Looking at buying a video camera to mount on my helmet.

Which do you use & why?

Cheers

It's the industry standard.

A friend of mine is creative director for motortrend, they use gopros. The video production team at the college I work at, all gopros. I've owned every gopro and several contours, and there was no comparison. Just use google to pull up some reviews- gopro always wins.

Gopro 1 or 2?

The Gopro Hero 1 and Drift are comparable. Really depends on what you are using it for. Outside during the day, Hero 1 wins. Lower light? I think the Drift edge the gopro.

But, the Hero 2 is far better in all aspects. Even has options for the amount of fish eye on different resolution settings. I had a Hero 1, now I have a Hero 2.

DRIFT HD.

Standard remote start wireless button.

You can preview your videos without a PC on site right there and then & hear the audio.

You can swivel the lense to any angle without having to buy another mount like the go pro.
You can change out the lenses when they get scratched.
170 Field of view full HD
Takes photos in bursts as well as video. Can change settings like resolution without having to connect it to a computer.
Takes any old external microphone from tricky dickies or jaycar which IMO improves the audio.

Excellent customer support.

IMO Gopros are industry standard just like Apple Iphones. They make their money out of all the accessories you have to purchase to make them work properly.

Drift HD is simple.

Just to throw another option into the equation - Sony have just released their first offering into this segment of the market, the Actioncam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu8MKceMve4 . With a long history behind them in the professional broadcast market and with the Carl Zeis lens it promises to be a good offering - lets hope so anyway i've just ordered one!

More views & opions guys. Still not convinced.

I saw a you tube with both cams and the Go Pro looked better but the Drift HD they were using didn't have the new fimware upgrade installed. They reckon it's much better, especially with exposure.

As above, the only drama I have with mine is the wind noise. I think there is a mod you can do to the microphone to fix it, a wind sock or something, haven't tried this yet.

Yes the latest firmware is much better with regards to exposure.

I have taped some masking tape over the internal mic with some success. Prefer to use an external mic tucked up in the helmet.

Wind noise is something that I have always heard when people use their GoPros.

Mounted on the side is ok. But Im inclined to think that on top is better if you want to take advantage of the full 170Degree View.

Had a play with my new Sony Actioncam today - very impressed. I like the fact that you can use your mobile phone as a viewfinder to frame the shot and as a remote contol. The steady shot is far better than anything else i've seen and as you would expect from Sony the quality is excellent - heres a direct comparrison with the Hero 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvfXWzmldYI

Went and had a look at the Sony Action Camera today and I think I like.... It also seems to be beating the Go Pro in the side by side video test and the sound quality seems to be better. Looks like it needs to be housed in the clear housing thou as the lense cannot be changed. That's the only downer I have found so far.....

Awesome comparison video.......amazing how how 2 cams at same time can see things so differently. There was a time the sun spots on the Sony were an issue; not sure if there was a splash on the lens or not.........many thanks
