I didn't know if it was technically sundown or sunrise, but it would get like this for a few hours then get bright again. I kept not stopping at places when I should've and when I took this I was cold and had just left a town with full motels and campground. The campground didn't look very nice anyway.

Eventually I passed this campground right by the road, totally empty except for one RV. Nice place, with a plane, an airstrip and a giant stuffed polar bear.

I met this group of riders at the start of the Dalton Highway. The second bike from the left was piloted by the first female GS rider I met at that sign.

Before I could finish eating my energy bar and leave another group pulled up with the second female GS rider. The four were from Maryland, Washington, California and the Virgin Islands.

Before I left the Dalton Highway sign another rider had pulled up. I think if someone wanted to be the only motorcycle at that sign they'd have been waiting until midnight.

On the haul road.

I got a good look at the pipeline at Yukon River.

On the way to Yukon River I saw a car pulled off and on a jack and stopped to see if they needed anything. They were putting the donut spare on the right rear after getting a flat. The haul road is rough on tires. They eventually pulled into Yukon River with the other rear tire flat and had to wait for some tire guy to come out and take care of them.

The bridge over the Yukon River is in the background to the right. It's covered with wood planks that were being torn up and replaced, so there was no chance to get a picture from the bridge. Great view though. The beemers were from the second group I met at the Dalton Highway sign. I met this same group later on the boat, they caught the same ferry I did.

Finger Rock, almost in the Arctic Circle.

Met up with Julie, Matt, Pat and Scott again at the arctic circle sign. They decided to turn around and go back, I went north to Coldfoot.

Hi Again Snowrider;
We met you at this sign. Speedy (yellow GS Girl) and I (red GS guy) are back home now and wish we were still on the road. This is a great report you have going. Keep up the great posts, and keep having fun on your trip.

I ended up camping that night at the site next to yours north of Coldfoot, but you guys were gone by the time I woke up in the morning. It was good meeting you.

Snowrider (Aaron) rode down from Alaska to visit his friend in San Diego. He called me when he got into town, saying he might leave the next day. I said I wanted to have a beer with him and hear about his Alaska ride. I invited him to our Thursday Night Bikes, Pizza and Beer night so we could meet him and hear some stories. So Aaron decided to stay an extra day and I met him on my 950. He followed me to Roger's house.

trip

Snowman,

I just went through your entire report; I really enjoyed it!! You have the unique ability with regards to your writing style to paint a GREAT picture..

I hope to do this trip as well, from Illinois. I figure it would require a minimun of 4 weeks, although 6 would probably be better.

Did you have many worries of bears while camping??

Take care and ride safe

PS- I'd be riding my DR or KLR

Good meeting all you guys. I'll be back for Baja eventually. My Baja experience on this trip was like the Baja 1000 without the zeros.

I didn't worry about bears much. I didn't leave food out and had bear spray next to me.
