Day 60

From Altai City we were riding towards Otgon, from where we would take a track into the mountains off the main roads towards UB.
Because Beamster and I had to catch our flight back to Holland we had to do a lot of kilometers a day.
We didn't have that much choice. But we all thought it was a shame to miss all the small tracks Walter had planned for us.
So After we had checked the map there was one track we could take that would lead us through a mountainous valley.
This valley would take us from the southern route to the northern route.

This Cinereous Vulture flew off the moment we came to close to the dead sheep he was feeding on.

I know you aren't this far east yet, not even at Irkutsk, but I checked the (current) weather in Yakutsk, WTF! Gives me a whole new appreciation for those that tough if out in the 'off season'.

I hear its suppose to be balmy Thursday.

This is all in Celsius, but at this temperature, I don't think it matters. (-51C = -60F)

Do you know the SODIS Method? http://www.sodis.ch/methode/index_EN
Not usable on the road, but good to know if you had to stay for some days to get rid of your sickness. It's a low tech solution.

I don't know if this is fact or fiction, http://www.banthebottle.net/articles...ausing-toxins/ but I'd err on the on the side of caution.

A steripen, http://www.buysteripen.com/compare/ will do this in 90 seconds

Sorry, no cigar.

As kepeg already indicated not usable on the road.
The method depends on UV radiation killing germs. Six hours requires nothing but ideal circumstances: less than 50% cloud cover, a clear bottle (no scratches!), direct exposure (not hopping in & out of shadow). Deviate from these and the exposure time quickly rises into days.

Bottom line: stick to stove and chlorine.

Major thanks out to whoever posted the link to the original Colebatch report of riding from China to London. I am just partway through that one & I see now why these are so easy for him. That one was a clear case of Murphy along with his whole family!!! Suffice to say that everything that could go wrong did & things that hod no possibility of failing did as well.

He managed to make lemonade out of lemons a few times however.

I'm lovin' this report as I do all of them. I'll never make it,but I sure do appreciate reading about those who do.

Carry On....

A golf course is the wanton, criminal waste of a perfectly good rifle range.

Ha! Of course, my point was that this part of the world is extremely inhospitable during the long winter months, we get a very desirable perspective with all this amazing summer pics.

I know a few people have done Siberia during the winter, one guy on a Harley with a side car, all the way to Magadan.
