Here's a general question for any of you guys (B included). You all talk about punctures, but don't say what the actual problem is. I've traveled a lot in Baja and the primary offender is nails that have dropped out of used lumber that's carted from the USA.....but we have mystery holes and rim pinches as well as stems pulled, but by far the most are nails in Baja. I even came across a tube that had been warn thin in a bunch of places not long ago.

Can you give an overall view of causes of the flats out there?

Also, recently I gave up on tubes and have switched to sealing up my rims with 'Shoe Goo' or 'Seal all' (they are the same thing), and now am running tubeless on my DR350. I'm in the first year of running tubeless, but so far I'm recommending it.

I just recently finished the Continental Divide ride this last summer (2500 miles of dirt, and another 2500 of pavement). I did pick up a horse shoe nail on a Montana trail. It hadn't caused the tire to leak as it sealed itself. I just happened to notice the nail in there, and plugged the tire in a couple minutes without even losing the air that was in the tire. I lost maybe 5 lbs.

Have you considered going tubeless?

Also, P has impressed me from his bike's preparedness. I think P is a Mechanical standout, and I'd seek out his opinion on anything moto.

P, would you care to give an opinion on why BMWs seem to lose an inordinate amount of Ring and pinions. I know that's kind of a hijack, so don't go into that if you don't want to, or maybe a PM would work.

New to this Forum thanks to Prutser, i`m digging trough al these incredible pictures and reading als those great great stuff about the journey that you people made and it leaves me Flabbergasted and in AWE !!


i`m 29 years turning 30 in a month, and 4 months ago passed my license and bought my first bike ( Vstrom 650 2008 modded with Hyperpro and very nice foglights ) now looking into these great people doing even greater things i can only immagine how much i need to learn to even come close to travel like this.


BIG BIG thanks to the people sharing this with us its so much fun and there is so much to be learned from all this that i`m hardly getting to post because i`m only reading for hours and hours.

Please keep posting please keep riding and above all please keep enjoying what you do so we can glimpse and enjoy trough pictures and stories !!

The whole ride has been amazing so far, but the last days to UB were certainly NOT the best of them all.
The amount of km's we had to do in this kind of weather were exhausting.
Because of al the deep waterfilled holes on the track we had to concentrate every second of the ride.
The tracks were SO slippery that trying to steer around the potholes was almost impossible, and there were so many that you would still ride into another one if you tried.

The weather wasn't stimulating to take out the camera. The only camera left was the one on my cell phone !!
As I lost my old canon Ixus in the Altai while I was gathering wood for our campfire
which I didn't miss till we were 200 km further
So later I used beamsters Lumix Tz7 to take snapshots while riding. But it was in my chest pocket when I did the "does an Airhead float" test
Result= another camera F#@KT
Because the camera in my tank bag was not in its waterproof pouch at that moment, my last camera with its lens's were ruined too.
I could still use the camera for a few more days. But on day 62 from tsakhir to tsetserleg the cell phone camera was the only working one left..

The pictures from this point on are of a poor quality.

This one is taken in our Tsetserleg hotels restaurant where we ordered our meals by just pointing four things on the on the mongolian menu.
Non of the waitresses spoke other than Mongolian, so we were in for a surprise. It turned out to be a good one, because the food was really fantastic.

The bad camera sure makes the guy's look tired
