The evening at Nikita's
After we were all together again we got three rooms, the bikes inside a fence and outside our small huts
![]() ![]() We headed over to the restaurant to get some food. ![]() There were a lot of people there. Of all nationalities and ages. Most of them were backpackers doing their Trans Siberian Rail Road trip from Moscow to Vladivostok and now they had a little detour up to Olkhon. We even met an old friend. Pierre the piano tuner

The ride to Olkhon Island
More pics from the days ride up to Olkhon Island.
Yours truly, waiting for the ferry - complete with bug debris on my shades: ![]() Black and White ... two BMW X-challenges on Olkhon Island The World Famous Terry Brown from Cambridge, England ... ![]() The gang ... enjoying the good weather and the great scenery: ![]() We stayed at Nikita's Place ... a hotel / hostel on Olkhon that is popular with backpackers. I told the guys, this was the last time you will see tourists for a long time. Our trip beyond here starts to get into the boonies.

What has happened to advriders?
There used to be time when photos of babes in bikinis were quoted again and again in Walter's ride reports. Now I see some guy in suit being quoted again and again. No offense, Rod. You look good in the suit but much better on your KTM in proper gear. Walter, have you any idea what has caused flat battery on your bike? Would you go with Lithium battery again? Would it be your choice when going alone to remote places? |

Yes ... turning the starter over and over until the battery ran out. Yes I would still use them ... and I would still take the special charger for it.

my 2cts on crashbars
cannot resits to provide my 2cts to the crashbar topic ...
![]() that happens when you try to ride curves too agressive ![]() ![]() The good thing is that the cylinder head lid can be turned upside down and then with a little tape or so the journey can continue. That incident happened with the crash bar installed (now a few mm thinner ). Without that crash bar, I am afraid the head/valves would have been damaged.

Then u need crash bars for asphalt riding. :) rather than for off road riding.
- - - Guys I am not claiming there is a right or wrong opinion re crashbars or that other people ought to follow my view on crashbars ... but if someone does specifically ask for my opinion on them or why I dont have them, then I am kinda obliged to give them my opinion. Its only my opinion at the end of the day. Its not everyones opinion and its not necessarily the right opinion. I dont want to get off topic again with pages of different responses about crashbars. It is still a ride report primarily rather than a bike building thread

Baikal
After those words from our sponsors...back to today's scheduled programme...
![]() ![]() Guys. About Baikal...did anyone get a swim or is it feckin' freezing?. I've swum in Loch Lomond in the summer, and the North sea off Shetland, and on both occasions I turned in to a mannekin ...i.e i had to find my tadger with braille despite even more vigourous than normal "massaging". When it finally poked its miserable self, blinking, out of the rest of me I could have been forgiven for thinking I'd developed a bad pimple. ![]() Just wondered if Baikal has similarly emasculating properties .....It's a chilly minus 15C there right now and about to drop to a piss freezing -27C across the next day or two. |
