Gila Bend Day Trip...again

Ok, let's try this again...I just signed up on Smugmug, so hopefully the photos will show up this time...

A couple weeks ago, I went in search of abandoned airstrips south of Gila Bend, AZ...on the way...

The airstrips ended up being in the middle of the 2 million + acre Barry Goldwater Bombing Range...

another view....

So I went north instead to check out Gillespie Dam and Bridge...

At the time of it's construction in the 1920's, it was the largest privately funded dam in AZ

In 1993, it became the largest dam failure in the state of AZ when it was breached by heavy flooding...

notice the large missing portion in the middle...ooopsss

It was never repaired, the water level now being controlled by pumps and irrigation canals...next up, KOFA !

I've lived in AZ for over 6 years and I didn't know about this Dam or Bridge... Guess it's time to visit them

I worked at the bombing ranges from 1974-1976, lots of places to explore, probably still some ordinance around

Watch out for Brahmas in dry washes It is an open range area.

I'm going out soon to the west side of the Bombing Range, KOFA Wildlife Preserve, to check out more airstrips...here is a cool site w/ state by state info....http://www.airfields-freeman.com/

It's a great day trip, lots to see. On the way to dam there are two huge solar farms (if you take Old Rt 80 north)

Wow, cool. I'll have to check it out in the next couple of weeks. I've lived in in the Phoenix area since the '60's and haven never really been around that area at all. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for reposting it.
