Tool kit

Got a couple hour ride in on Tuesday before the rains set in... Then went thrift store shopping with my wife and came across this for 50 cents: a genuine Honda tool kit. Missing the screwdriver handle and 1 wrench I think, but still cool! Fits nicely in the saddlebag.

Rode the ugly bike s little on Sunday. Needs a baffle for the exhaust. Didn't realize it was missing but upon close inspection it is. Probably better not tempt the forces of jonny law park ranger edition and keep it in the garage until I have orv sticker and a baffle. :p

I got as far as the dropped pin and then headed back. Pictures taken from that point.

More parts!

Bike number 2 got a stock muffler with baffle and headerpipe courtesy of Eugene Craigslist 20$ ! If anyone needs the other one (as shown on floor), PM me and we can work something out. Also, still have the small pile of parts although I think I will keep the valves.

Finished my workbench today. Then the bikes got jealous so had to take their picture too.

I was wondering if you'd be willing to share any tips or tricks for a top end rebuild. I have a newly acquired '85 XR600 and want to rebuild the top end as it's blowing smoke around the top gasket, left side, on start up, though surprisingly it is easy to start, runs strong and has good compression. This actually has me a bit confused, but since I'm new to XR600 (I've ridden a XR250L for years) I don't pretend to understand the bike yet. I noticed you have an early model XR too, any suggestions would be appreciated if you care to share. Than you.

John,

Pull the top end and cylinder. Have the piston and cylinder measured by a machinist to see if the piston is still in spec. If so then you can re-ring it. If not then a new piston is in order. Do a valve job on the head.

Some light reading:

I'd be glad to help any way I can. Steve is def the guy for the technical good stuff tho. Stripped thread repair, quality parts and attention to detail will give you success. PM or write here if you have a question - no problem. I'm in Alaska commercial fishing until August 10 so Internet is sketchy right now. Happy trails!
