BMW R100 GS/ Battery question

I've got a R100GS that had a new battery installed last year, and was last rode 14 months ago before being put on the BMW battery charger. This bike started and rode fine, even with the old gas.
I pulled off the battery caps and all but 2 cells had water.

Questions-

Do you think this damaged the battery? Or because it started with good power it should be fine?

Is the BMW battery charger ok to use for long term or should I get a battery tender with the porper plug?

I know I don't like finding unanswered posts when searching, and one pet peeve of mine is not finishing whatever post someone started without tying out by letting everyone know what the solution was.

So here’s what I found out after calling BMW.

The battery should be no problem – adding water is recommended.

Apparently the 1989 battery charger is made to connect and forget. (This one I have a hard time believing)
I think the battery tender brand has better technology than the 23 year old BMW charger.

I think that there hasnt been a whole lot of technological advances in how a battery gets charged in the last twenty years. Not much to improve on, there, except for maybe reading state of charge and modulating it from there... BUt even that is pretty old stuff. Old machinery works fine. You ride a BMW, right?

Apart from that, I would say that if the battery hasnt really been used much with a few cells dry it will probably be ok for while. Might have a shorter than normal life span but will probably work just fine for the foreseeable.
