Stand Up Paddleboard Question
OK, I have a question for those of you privy to the stand up paddleboard world. I am interested in getting a paddleboard for my wife and I that we can both use at the same time. A tandem paddleboard, if you will. I'm 180, my wife is 110, and I'm wondering if a 12 ft board will suit us. I'm imagining one of us sitting up front while the other stands at the back. I'm even thinking of having the front person use a canoe paddle to help with forward motion. Are we going to sink? Are we going to be constantly tipping over? Are we going to be dead in the water? Should we go with something shorter/longer?

Best thing you can do is find a SUP shop. Talk to them, take a course, try some stuff. You may consider a tandem kayak(?).

Stand up on the same board as your wife? Are you crazy? Tandem anything will end up in Divorce.

My wife and I attempted to get our picture taken on a 11 foot something SUP and we got wet several times. It wasn't buoyant enough for the two of us. The variety in boards is great so you might find something that will work. For my wife and I two boards would work out better. Ever try a tandem bike? it is a good test of teamwork.........

Actually, we do have a tandem bicycle. Also, a tandem skateboard (well, a longboard we ride together), a tandem motorcycle (aren't pretty much all of them?) and a tandem car (it actually seats four!) haha. We actually really enjoy doing stuff like that together. She can actually pilot everything but the bicycle with me on the back, it's too hard for me not to try to steer with my weight in the back for some reason.
I think both of us standing would be a bit of a stretch, but I seem to see a lot of parents with their larger children on the front.

I've never seen two full size people on a SUP. I'd think it'd work ok as long as you are on pretty much flat water (it'd take some insane skills to do tandem surfing). I'd think that tight turns would be quite difficult. There are a lot of factors other than length too--width, thickness, shape, etc. You'll want about the longest thing you can find I think. Post up pictures of what you end up with

I think you could do it both standing - kind of like a canoe.
Re: craft - I have a friend who takes his two dogs - on the river. He had the NRS Baron and it holds the weight really well, is stable and rolls up. http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.a...8&pdeptid=2450

You're gonna want to find basically the biggest, widest board you possibly can. I end up with my dog (~70lb lab) on the front of mine a lot and the extra weight is manageable but very dicey. Some small surfs are possible but I pretty much plan on swimming. This is on one of the most stable boards out there, Badfish MCIT inflatable, anything skinnier would be really tough.
My wife and I trade off between our 9' and 10'6" boards and couldn't be happier. Any reason she doesn't want her own? |

Our 12' holds us at 180 and 130. Was a bit unstable until we got used to it and picked up our speed.
