Question R100gs engine block/ crankcase needed

Anyone out there got an r100gs engine case with decent cylinder studs? Or a short block that will work for a 1991 gs? Thanks paul

Oh, no! You couldn't get the helicoil repair to work, huh? Bummer.

The previous owner of my pd trashed the engine by fitting the entire gasket set that came with the oil change kit. The bikes fitted with an early 80s bottom end. No issues at all with it.

The rocker shaft you generously donated will work. I replaced the failed helicoil with a keensert, doped it all with high heat loktite, and it tightened just fine. Yet another stud pulled out! Top front came out, yes the one with the oil galley. I have had 5 studs pull out of the crank, and had to repair one twice, and am getting fed up!

Any way i am going to keensert the one with the oil galley today. I drilled and tapped it to 14mm last night and it looks good.

Was it an r100 bottem end? Did the part numbers match? Is an r80 crank case the same as an r100. I'm thinking of getting one for next winters rebuild...

Yes, they're the same apart from the R100 models being set up for an oil cooler. That's easy enough to change though. Other than that the R80 and R100 bottom ends are interchangeable.

Have you considered that perhaps the problem lies between the wrench-to-user interface? After pulling out the third stud, it seems likely that there may be nothing wrong with the threaded holes and this is a procedural problem. Are you using a beam torque wrench or the 'click' type? If the latter, has it been calibrated recently for the range of torque needed (25 ft-lb)? Not that you can't just replace threads and engine cases - but at some point it seems this question should be asked. Good luck!

OK.

I ask because there is a shortblock on the shelf, r100 or 90 (?),but shipping these can cost more than it is worth.

I use a snapon 3/8 drive dial guage torque wrench, and never go over 25lb. I torque up at 5lb intervals. I bought the bike with 60,000 miles in it, refreshed the exhaust valves, preplaced the rings, then the studs began to pull. 4 went on one two week trip! I assume in resuming factory compression with top end work, the studs became stressed. The bike was mainly dealer serviced, for its first 55000 mi, by dealers.... I have 90,000 miles on it now...great bike, plan on riding it forever!

Shipping to Canada is expensive. I'm going to let the loctite cure for a few days, re assemble, then see how it goes. I just finished the upper stud now, looks fine from the outside...
