KTM said “We want him to ride the Dakar without any pressure, embrace the adventure and learn from the experience,” so good luck to him, what an opportunity!

just to prove he knows his way around a dirt bike...

Definately disappointing to see Coma out for this year, he always manages to tkae it to the french and let them know they are not the only ones involved in Dakar. It puts all our guys one spot closer to the front, so lets hope the can get up there. Looking forward to watching it this year.

HRC said the team was to young to absorb a new member in the team at this late stage.

They were also the wrong nationality, HRC picked there riders (partly) from where they are from, target markets and all that.

They used to do it in GP as well.

One Smith brother was already going with another team, the other hadn't been entered so it may have been a bit to difficult to get him entered at that late stage.

I'm sure there are many other reasons too.

I'll be keeping a keen eye on young 24y/o (same as me!) Italian rider Manuel Lucchese who'll be riding his second Dakar, last year he raced on a Husaberg with support from public donations from fans, unfortunately he was a DNF with an engine failure but this year he's back again in the same diy/livin' on a shoestring style and he's racing as a full privateer on a bike he was loaned just 2 days before he set sail for the Dakar. The bloke has not a cent to his name and is doing this in true adventure style but rest assured he can ride alright, he's the current Junior Baja World Champion in the Over 450cc class and also finished in 2nd place in the Junior World Rallies Championship.

an interview with Manuel from last year:
