Back on the Horse - PIG!

What a crazy last few months it’s been. Despite the unnecessary stress on myself and family PLUS a broken leg and severely sprained ankle 7.5 weeks ago: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=823732 my life is buoyed by a large circle of excellent friends who have been incredibly supportive, helpful and genuinely caring.

So, I receive an invitation to visit Ryan’s ranch down south towards the Klamath Marsh, since my new-to-me XR650R is all prepped (by N2motoprises thank you very much Pat) I figure it is about time to get back on the HORSE and take a mellow tour with some of the guys. Didn’t sleep too much the night before in anticipation but was greeted by this typical Central Oregon sunrise on my way to meet up with the fellas at Monkey’s new house.

A great crew assembled including these 2 characters Graham (left) and his cool dad Mark (right) who rented a BMW 650 to see if he would enjoy this ‘Adventure/Dualsport’ thing. Mark has 100,000 miles or more riding his Harley so we know he’s a capable operator and that we can’t just take him out for a backcountry ‘Woxing’ (see: getting completely lost and forced into bushwacking or worse!) Graham is one of the fastest guys I know but he’s riding an XR for the first time and will hopefully take it easy on the rest of us.

The Professor (‘95 KTM 620 RXC), N2moto (XR650R) and Jack (KTM 950 SE) and Monkey (recently S-modeled KTM 950 ADV) round out the group.

We are a little late getting out of town - (you know about that side stand switch on your KTM right Monkey? Ha Ha)
and make time through cold air south on China Hat road just to get out there quickly.

My leg and ankle feel really good in the boot and though it’s a bit intimidating roasting the gravel at 60 mph, I’m sooooo happy to be out in the woods on my bitchin’ Honda!

We make real good time to Cabin Lake and get the group together before we head to Fort Rock and Silver Lake beyond. Graham is getting used to (kicking!) that Honda and everyone is stoked on the conditions.

Down out of the clouds there’s a couple miles of fun 2 track that parallel the big gravel road. They both go to the same spot so Mark, the Professor and I roll the road ahead so I can take some shots.

Fort Rock in the background.

Monkey on the KTM along the 2 track.

Here comes Jack making the 950 SE look like a normal sized dirt bike.

Waiting and waiting for N2moto and Graham when I finally see them coming. Never sat so long for such mediocre pictures HA!

N2moto charging his XR.

After rolling through Fort Rock we tried to put together a dirt route to Silver Lake for fuel. Graham showing that XR who’s boss.

Graham - (note throttle position!)

N2moto

Jack

Monkey

We gas up in Silver Lake and continue south into some new-to-us country.

More soon.

After fueling in Silver Lake we continued southwest towards the ranch. Exploring a maze of logging roads took us up to the edge of the snow and back down as we zig zagged through the forest. Jack doing some road maintenance

Monkey lifted that cool 950 a couple inches and now it’s a proper KTM ADV set up.

The Professor with his new 620 LC4 motor and custom headlight shroud

N2Moto (one of the other fastest guys I know) helping Jack with the road work.

. . . more

The sprinkles stopped, the sun came out and the temperatures suddenly went up. I was roasting and took off the rain gear for the first time today. We’re getting close to the ranch now and wait to regroup before Monkey leads us to the gate.

We make it to Neffer’s ranch in one piece and all together unscathed. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED !

The place is incredible. Others have much better shots than mine but what an oasis at the base of an untapped mountain.

The ankle doesn’t look too swollen.

The sun kept popping out and shining like movie set lighting.

Graham never roosted too far ahead and Mark had a great taste of dualsport riding today!

Uh oh, the qwads came out and more libations were enjoyed (by some more than others!)

Devil Monkey

The thing about qwads is you can operate with one hand and a passenger.

Shenanigans continued on into the night and the next day some of us had to pay - !
It was raining pretty steady in the morning and we were in no hurry to get soaked so we took our time getting ready for the ride home. We’d studied the map and had a plan. Mark decided to ride towards home and wait for us in Fort Rock while the rest of us explored the hills east of the ranch. First was this meadow track. Monkey rocking that 950!

The Professor, comfortable on his 620

N2moto - yeah Pat!

After the meadow we spied an old abandoned skidder track and decided to see if we could get Monkey’s boxes stuck in the undergrowth - it didn’t work, they’re too slippery.

The Professor using that rear wheel.

Jack

We could’ve kept to the roads and 2 tracks but kept seeing these cow trails and finally got sucked onto one which of course took us into the trees . . .

. . . and then into rocks (looks way nicer than it was).

Somebody is back in there swearing and cussing.

Those of us on the Hondas are preparing for a classic ‘Woxing’ of our comrades and carefully monitoring their frustrations so as not to take it too far.

‘They’re lost Pat - go round’em up!’

Uh oh - 950 SE down in the tight lodge pole!

Not exactly 950 ADV country but no problem.

The Professor is getting used to this by now.

We regroup on a nicely soaked pumice road and take a break.

Everyone is sweating and ready to move through some cool morning air to dry out a bit but . . .

. . . that road just petered out into nothing and of course it would be a shame to not forge ahead through the harvested timber, stumps and rocks towards what must be a road just through the trees right?

N2moto did the scouting and rode this challenging hill both directions to find the way through. ‘Freeballin’

Holy crap Jacksquatch - don’t run me over with that monster!

Whew! missed

Oh Dog - watch it Monkey!

Professor’s offroad skills improve with every adventure.

With all the goofing around up in the hills, we knew Mark had to be waiting for us in Fort Rock so we gassed up in Silver Lake and headed north for lunch - after some XR kicking!

I had some other ideas for getting us to FR on dirt which ended up at a posted NO TRESSPASSING sign. Before that though I had a little ‘get off’ which is how I got this ‘low angle’ shot - ha ha.

A little dusty but fun track looped us back to HWY 31

My lens is all scratched from a roosting last year dang it.

Made it to lunch, grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed back towards Bend.

Roostafari Monkey!

Yeah Professor!

N2Moto can smell the barn!

We torched China Hat road back towards Bend in the waning evening light. Everyone scanning for deer or the loose cow, idiot driver or wandering Subaru. It was a successful trip for me, The Professor and Jack who’re both recovering from shoulder injuries. Back at Monkey’s cool hut to grab our stuff out of Neffer’s truck and head home.

Graham had to return Mark’s rental - you will probably NEVER see him on a BMW 650 Dakar again so . . .

. . . there ya have it!

Thanks all you fellas for the excellent return to the sport for myself, Professor and Jacksquatch and special thanks Neffer for opening up your amazing ranch to us all, till the next time!
