Took my SE to the (asphalt) race track

So last weekend I was at Thunderhill raceway in Northern CA., and I had my SE in the trailer so for the very last session of the day ('C' class) I decided to take it out. The inspiration came from the 950 ADV video at Laguna Seca I saw here years ago. It looked fun!

A little about the bike. I was running Pirelli Scorps on the stock SE (narrower) wheels. They had about 28 lbs. of pressure in them and I didn't even bother to mess with it. 28 should be good, right?

I can tell you that the back end, with a Scorp and a 2.5" wheel, was all over the place under acceleration. Squirming and dancing. Predictable but worrying, so I was very careful going up the inside of other riders. The last thing I wanted was to go down while purely screwing around on a dirt bike and take out some innocent bystander.

It was a good time, but I only did about 5 laps before I got off the track. This lap is about a 2:38 or so, compared to the 2:08 I had just run on my R6!

There is something funny about going to the track with an 8" Baja light, luggage racks and hand guards.

Last summer I had the ADV in the trailer at thunderhill while running my VFR; aaaalllllllllmost took it out for a spin, bu the nearly new TKC80 on the front and the MEFO on the back, combined with my buddies helicopter ride, talked me out of it. Someday, though...looks like fun!

Yeah, the Mefo I could do, but the TKC would keep me off the track. My unbalanced Scorps were fun enough at 100 mph!

You could shave a few seconds by going straight in two or three corners; you know, it's an off road machine

I did that in T1 on my R6. Didn't work out so well.

That front fender was floopin in the wind. I bet those guys you passed felt real slow. I love dropping street bikes on my 990 adv. It's fun to follow them and then pass them in a corner sideways.

I plan on taking my 950 SE to the track but only after I can get a set of wheels with some decent rubber. Planning on keeping knobbies on the stock wheels. I always have to remind myself to not trail brake going into corners on the street, would be bad on the track.

I went to Summit Point in West Virginia once and Bobs BMW was doing a track day....it was funny to see a half a dozen R1200GS's with probably Metzler Tourances (with the Zega and Gobi panniers still on) going full tilt boogie around the track. Not fast, but still relatively stable and kinda wild at the same time.

Classy. I love dragging my gobi's and passing crotch rockets in the twisties. When they pull up next to me at the next stop they usually look bewildered.

Cool video. I am impressed with the SE ability on the corners. I would love to try the track on it, I think it would be more fun than my duc, of course I loved the track on my super hawk.
